  • The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has recently submitted to OMB for review the following proposal for the collection of information under the provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (44 U.S.C. chapter 35). The NRC hereby informs potential respondents that an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and that a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control number. • Have we forgotten? When unemployment is counted in urban communities it is generally in double digits. The state of Michigan has a 15 percent rate of unemployment. The city of Detroit has a 28 percent rate of unemployment. Yet we know that many have dropped out of the reporting process and are not being counted on the rolls. They are now being counted in the heavy tolls that are taken in crime, despair, family splintering and angry people. Now is the time for a new type of Humphrey Hawkins Full Employment Act. It was Oct. 27, 1978 when this bill was signed into law. Originally introduced by Augustus Hawkins and co-sponsored by Hubert Humphrey, it stated, "A bill to establish and translate into practical reality the right of all adult Americans able, willing and seeking to work to full o...

  • I have a strange question to ask: Do your friends and colleagues really like you? If you can answer that question in the affirmative you have satisfied a key element of your job search. This past week I received two calls from individuals who wanted to use me a reference in their job search. The first one simply wanted to put my name on her list of individual contacts, as she was preparing a list of references. I had met this woman around the office. We chatted in the hall about her job search, the type of employment she was hoping to find and what she expected in her new career.

  • Now is the time for a new type of Humphrey Hawkins Full Employment Act. It was Oct. 27, 1978 when this bill was signed into law. I don't care what you call it, we need to implement a national program to help the people of America. The Stimulus Program is taking too long to implement in terms of the trickle down to the streets of the nation, from the suites of the nation. This great need should not be written off as merely another government program. It is a government mandate to do what is necessary to provide, protect, promote and perpetuate the quality of life for all Americans. The Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony is president of the Detroit Branch NAACP and a member of thye NAACP. Reach him at (313) 347-2820 or revwendellanthony@gmail.com. • PARIS (AP) - Tens of thousands of students and workers marched in Paris and other French cities Saturday in the biggest show of anger yet at a jobs plan that has sparked violence and threatened to weaken the government. Youths set a car ablaze, broke a shop window and hurled stones, golf balls and other objects at police at the end of the Paris protest against a plan for a new type of job contract to increase employment among less privileged youths by making the labor market more flexible.

  • Coordinating the actions of individuals is not a trivial task. Paradoxically, one of the most celebrated ideas in economics -- what Adam Smith called the invisible hand -- tells people that it is not hard at all to coordinate: Market forces will guarantee an efficient allocation of resources. Labor markets are particularly susceptible to coordination failures because of the various frictions that exist within the complicated process through which workers and employers are matched together. Coordination failures make it possible for a labor market to wind up in a number of states, some of which are far more desirable in terms of social welfare. Just as drivers at an intersection benefit from traffic signals, labor markets might benefit from mechanisms that force particular outcomes in si...

  • New law school graduates prospects for meaningful employment as an attorney are decidedly bleak, and beginning in February, law schools won't be able to put such a rosy spin on it for prospective students. As representatives of local hiring agencies point out, many area firms have hiring freezes and there is stiff competition for the few openings that do occur. Now, the American Bar Association's Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar is requiring law schools to provide more detailed job and salary information on the questionnaire they provide to the ABA. The expanded information to be required is in the areas of employment status, employer type and employer location.

  • It should have been different, said Dawayne Shelley as he stood on the perimeter of a construction site at the intersection of Erato and Galvez streets, staring at silhouettes frame steel in the distance. It should have been the type of story that lifted up all New Orleanians, he said -- dozens of public housing residents hired to work on the redevelopment of B.W. Cooper, trained in construction and given skills that could result in careers instead of perpetual minimum wage employment.
