  • I WONDER IF IT IS POSSIBLE to take one feature from a hybrid car and use it on a regular car to save gas. When stopped at a red light or stop sign, or dead cold in a traffic jam, why can't a regular car have the feature that simply shuts off the engine and then turns it on again when you hit the gas pedal? Come to think of it, golf carts do this, too. Is it some Foreign Oil or Big Three conspiracy that keeps us from benefiting from this ingenious fuel-saving feature? Or am I missing something very obvious as to why this could not be installed in my trusty 2006 Saturn Ion? - Luther Ray: You already have that feature, Luther. It's called the key.

  • Notable debutantes include Mercedes' new BlueTEC line of SUVs, including the all-new GLK compact crossover. BMW will be entering the diesel market in the United States for the first time in 2009, with performance-oriented diesels for its X5 and 3-Series models. Volkswagen's turbocharged direct injection (TDI) line of diesels already has a loyal following among "green" buyers, and the powerplant returns in the Jetta for 2009. • [Mike Lambert]: Technology in new cars takes many directions. One could look at hybrids, electric cars or hydrogen-propelled cars and ask who is going to work on them and where are the parts going to come from? Well, the answer better be us and the shops we service, or we will be relegated to the "ancient technology" vehicles. I am fully confident that the aftermarket is up to the challenge.

  • Bluetooth headsets, which wirelessly connect an earpiece with a cell phone to allow hands-free conversations, are particularly useful in cars -- especially since, in many states, drivers can be ticketed for using cell phones without these headsets. To make Bluetooth even easier to use in cars, most new luxury cars and some standard cars are sold with optional built-in Bluetooth speakerphone technology, which doesn't even require an earpiece. Some cars come with built-in iPod integration, displaying song titles on the dashboard and controlling the iPod using buttons on the steering wheel, again to minimize distractions. One new built- in product, SYNC, the voice-activated system created by Ford Motor Co. and Microsoft Corp., lets users do both things hands-free: play music or make phone ...
