  • This is the second of two articles describing how a new approach to selecting, training and coaching people helped to improve the effectiveness of new business development at the Dow Chemical Company. Part I explained how key aspects of the approach, called Speed, delivered over $23 billion in cumulative value between 1991 and 2008 from the company's formerly commoditized Polyolefins and Elastomers (PO&E) business. Part II describes the implementation of Speed more broadly in Dow between 2005 and 2007. Dow Automotive R&D, for example, strengthened its culture of creativity significantly in less than one year. In 2007, Dow Performance Plastics and Chemicals business identified and coached six Rainmaker personality types in Business Opportunity Analysis techniques who then identif...

  • In the year just past, attorneys trying to run small firms faced the challenges of the down economy while also seeing exciting possibilities in new technology and web tools. Here are some of Lawyers USA's best articles from 2009 to help you manage and grow your law firm, even in today's tough economy:

  • Allegheny General Hospital, based in Pittsburgh, annually admits up to 31,500 patients and handles roughly 60,000 emergency visits. Physicians at Allegheny General are faced with multiple duties on a daily basis, leaving little time for conducting research in their specific fields. Using MEDLINE, the central database for medical information, doctors search for information and articles to further their research on a multitude of topics. MyEBMsearch uses new technology to "understand" medical texts and to better interpret the substance of the abstracts in MEDLINE. This enables high-speed content analysis and indexing, as well as automatic categorization of abstracts into clinically relevant topics. The doctors at Allegheny General are among the first in the US to use this new search mecha...

  • Industry observers want to know whether Clusty will become an option to [Google] and Yahoo!. The short answer is that only time will tell. Although Clusty has excellent features, it's not as likely to become a modern-language buzzword as Google is. "Let's Clusty it" just doesn't have the same ring as "Let's Google it. Information professionals have become quite adept at searching with new technology, but finding data that is hiding is the real labor of love. The articles the author is highlighting this month from Computers in Libraries, ONLINE, and The CyberSkeptic's Guide to Internet Research all tackle topics that revolve around the search. In each of the articles, information professionals find new hiding places for data and, best of all, discover new technology to help them in the ...

  • For so many years my primary form of consuming news has been via RSS feeds. RSS (short for Really Simple Syndication) is a technology that lets you subscribe to a Web site and be notified when new articles are available. It is great because it makes surfing the Web a more passive experience. Instead of opening 10 different browser tabs, I just subscribe to 10 different feeds and let them notify me of the newest articles. RSS never took off in the way I thought it would. While there are many who use aggregators such as Google Reader, NetNews Wire or FeedDemon, it's not a technology that became as ubiquitous as e- mail. In many ways it is still relegated as a convenience many sites add to appease their geekier visitors.

  • Several articles are discussed. Janetta Waterhouse was an information technology librarian at a New Jersey university when she decided to design training sessions that would explain basic computer technology. She theorized that, in doing so, she would enable her staff to perform the technology-based parts of their jobs more effectively ("Technology Training Can Be a Piece of Cake," CIL, September, pp. 16-18, 20-21). In his article "Relevance and the End of Objective Hits" (ONLINE, September/ October, pp. 16-21), Stephen Arnold considers the new search environment that encompasses Google, MSN, Yahoo!, Ask Jeeves, and the like. Arnold addresses the conspiracy theory surrounding search engine optimization, where publicly accessible Internet content is manipulated to boost Web site ranking...

  • ", originally self-published by Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus in 2004, argues that environmentalism is unable to deal with climate change and should "die" so that a new paradigm can emerge that can. The essay draws on history, political philosophy, and interviews with over two dozen leaders of large and small environmental organizations and foundations, including the Sierra Club, the Hewlett Foundation, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Shellenberger and Nordhaus suggest that the 20 year failure to reduce emissions is due in part to the unwillingness of environmental leaders to expand their conception of 'the environment' to include humans and economic development. Since this essay was published Shellenberger and Nordhaus authored Break Th...
