Evidence from academic studies and national-level policy reports suggests that university-industry relationships are now widely practiced in many countries and increasing in importance. University innovation centers (UICs) offer one mechanism for managing these relationships. UICs are an instrument to mobilize a critical mass of researchers to build new technology platforms and enable the corporate partner to explore new business opportunities, a process that requires work on new business models to be carried out in parallel with technological research. As an example, the paper analyzes the partnership between agribusiness Syngenta AG and the University of Manchester (UK) to establish a UIC focused on the introduction of sensors and informatics into agriculture ("agri-electronics").

The fact of the matter is that technology is changing not only how people work and shop but also how they "connect" with clients, colleagues, and friends. People have blogs, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, text messaging and the list goes on. These new technologies are not inherently dangerous, but they have the potential for abuse and that potential is where the perils lie. This years version of the West Virginia International Auto Show will feature the latest hybrids and electric-powered vehicles, including the plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt. The show will run from Jan. 28 to the 30th at the Civic Center. The Volt is bound to attract attention because it has been heavily advertised by General Motors but is not yet widely available for sale. Ruth Lemmon, president of the West Virginia Automobile and Truck Dealers Association, said the Volt is currently not available in West Virginia but we hope to have it available for consumers in the very near future. I understand that several Chevrolet dealers in West Virginia are keeping waiting lists. Other alternative fuel vehicles scheduled to be on display: The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, Honda Insight, Mercedes-Benz S-C...

But higher nutritional standards, better understanding of health risks, early detection and other factors have people living not only longer, but healthier.
