After South Africa's 14 years of de facto single party rule under the African National Congress (ANC), the party of Mandela and of liberation has experienced serious internal divisions over leadership personality, alleged corruption, and ideological conflict. Such divisions led prominent ANC vanguard Mosiua Letoka to officially sever his ties with the ANC and found the Congress of the People (COPE). Letoka, who was the former defense minister and close ally of recently-ousted president Thabo Mbeki, signaled an acute change in atmosphere of South African politics. While some welcome the formation of a new competitive party as a sign of "true democracy" taking root in South Africa, comparison with experiences of other countries shows that the result is often, at best, mixed. What is certa...

For better or for worse, his punditry provides an indispensable guide to how mainstream commentators have tried to defend neoliberalism in the face of challenges from worldwide social movements. Introduction Last summer, I had the rare and distinct privilege to attend a meeting of The Elders in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I silently observed some of the most charismatic and influential world leaders working toward promoting world peace. The white politicians, represented by Frederik Willem de Klerk and the National Party, continued to declare that apartheid and racism were mandated through religion, their Christian religion. [...] one of the commissioners was a commissioner on the TRC Ghana, Nigeria, quite a few, and in other parts of the world, the man who was the deputy chair of the commission, Dr. Alex Boraine, when we finished and went to New York, he founded the International Center for Transitional Justice.\n You shared a similar experience in South Africa when yo...

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa -- A splinter group of prominent African National Congress politicians launched a new party Tuesday in the first major challenge to the movement since it took power nearly 15 years ago after toppling South Africa's apartheid government.
At dueling rallies Tuesday, the ANC drew its usual star power and crowds. But the opposition politicians gathering across town delivered enough energy and biting rhetoric to worry the nation's long-dominant political force.

Economies that rank high on the strength of investor protection index have extensive disclosure requirements and give shareholders broad access to information both before and during trials to determine director liability. New Zealand and Singapore, which top the rankings on the index with 29 and 28 of 30 possible points, both require immediate disclosure of a related-party transaction and of the conflict of interest (table 7.1). They require prior approval of the transaction by the other shareholders. They enable the shareholders to hold the directors liable and to have the transaction voided if it damages the company. And in New Zealand shareholders can inspect all internal documents before deciding whether to sue.

Rankings on the ease of doing business do not tell the whole story about an economy's business environment. Lhe indicator does not account for all factors important for doing business- for example, macroeconomic conditions, infrastructure, workforce skills or security. But improvement in an economy's ranking does indicate that its government is creating a regulatory environment more conducive to operating a business. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia many economies continue to do so- and economies in the region once again dominate the list of top Doing Business reformers in 2007/08. During the transition from apartheid to majority rule in the 1990s, South Africa avoided civil war due to a combination of political compromises between the National Party and the African National Congress, the acquiescence of the military, and the need to relieve the war-related pressure on the South African economy. [...] to keep the peace, the new government had to accomplish three tasks: * Integrate the South African security forces with the armed wings of the ANC and other resistance movements. * Reconcile a divided society for the abuses committed during apartheid. * Integrate blacks into the South African economy.

Dr. [Khalid Abdul Muhammad] was influential to the youth because he came at a time when we didn't really have anything. We didn't have any structure or unity because of the biological warfare called 'crack.' He not only put the manhood back in Black men, he also gave us the sense of selfworth," said Shaka Shakur, Harlem chairman of the New Black Panther Party (NBPP).
Muhammad continued his quest for knowledge during his extensive journeys throughout Africa. "Dr. Khalid trained the Ugandan Army under Idi Amin, where he was a guest at Amin's palace for two years," said Kem-Neter, former Minister of Defense and Education for the New Black Panther Party (NBPP), "He also trained the Libyan Army at the behest of Momar Khadafi.
