• N.J. Seeks Closing of Small Insurer

State officials announced Friday that they are seeking a court order to shut a small, financially troubled New Jersey auto insurer. The order would enable the state's Property Liability Insurance Guaranty Association to pay the claims of The Security Indemnity Insurance Co., which had insured 21,000 cars at its peak last year. The company also insured several thousand businesses.

Illegal immigrants in New Jersey can be considered residents of the state for purposes of collecting certain benefits, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The 7-0 decision allows undocumented aliens to file claims with the Unsatisfied Claim and Judgment Fund, established for the benefit of car accident victims when there is no insurance company to pick up the medical bills.
