Teachers and parents at St. Anthony Catholic School are hoping to provide students with a new haven on Charleston's West Side when the parochial school shuts down at the end of the school year. The announcement to close the 89-year-old catholic school on the city's West Side came last month with a news release from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
A statewide campaign finance reform group will launch a second effort for a tough Bergen County pay-to-play law in January, after the new Freeholder Board is sworn in. The Citizens' Campaign, a government accountability group based in Metuchen, didn't get very far with a similar push in 2006, but group officials say they are encouraged by the Nov. 3 election of Republicans Rob Hermansen of Mahwah and John Driscoll of Paramus. Both candidates pledged to tighten restrictions on campaign donations from contractors.

TROTWOOD -- Kathy Rupp, widow of former Dayton Gems goalie Pat Rupp and usually a person who likes to work in the background, stood next to a malfunctioning microphone in the Hara Arena lobby Thursday afternoon, Dec. 3, and told her players, "We're going to kick some butt. Her" players because Rupp is now a partowner of the IHL team that left former owners Richard Bruner and Ryan Yerrick "broke" after only one month of the season had been played.
It's sort of frightening that every time the promotion rights change hands at the Milwaukee Mile, the move is made to "save" racing at the old track. Three salvations in less than 15 years don't say much for the overall health of the place. Still, if the change approved this week by the State Fair Park board of directors does the job, its importance certainly cannot be overstated.
Haiti relief HOPE FOR HAITI, volunteers needed for a new group sponsored by Live In Peace Foundation (a Taos-based humanitarian organization) focusing on Haitian children, which is organizing a fundraiser featuring a Haitian drum/dance group from Albuquerque along with local musicians.
