The one-year scholarships have yet to be actually awarded, however, because Focus: HOPE has so far only managed to raise $200,000 of its $600,000 goal. Paul Erickson, coordinator of special projects at Focus: HOPE, said the Success Scholarship Program got started because government funding for student tuition in the MTI program (which once amounted to 80 percent) has declined in the last five to eight years.
Tuition for the 31-week, full-time MTI program is $9,250, and the 20-week pre-engineering program is $4,000. The government funding used to be about $7,000 per student. Today, it ranges from about $1,500 to $2,000 per student. More than 90 percent of the students who come to Focus: HOPE have a demonstrable financial need and cannot pay for their education.

Nextel Communications required a unique communications system that include centralized access control management with accounting and audit trail capabilities, two-factor challenge/response authentication of users, compatibility with 3Com Total Control Network Access Server and ease of administration. The system also needed to be capable of expanding and handling the growth of the company. Nextel chose a system from Vasco Data Security. The first step was to instal the Vasco Access Control Manager software on a Windows NT server. Security issues were addressed with a user ID, a static password and a physical device to access a network. VACMan/CryptoPak smart cards were also used. The system implemented is unobtrusive and works in the background, unnoticed.
