  • JONESBORO - , 91, a resident of Washington County, passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at his home. Nelson was born May 20, 1920, to Raymond and Mittie (Hatch) Smith in Jonesboro. He attended Jonesboro schools and later entered the U.S. Army. Nelson served during World War II as an anti-tank gun crewman. He later served in the military as a surgical technician. After leaving the military, Nelson worked as a truck driver for Gay Brothers and C.F.D.W. Look. On July 15, 1966, he and Linda Gaudette were united in marriage in Machias. Nelson later worked for Maine Department of Transportation, retiring from maintenance and truck driving. He was also a member of Maine State Employees Association. In his free time, Nelson enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and snowmobile riding.

They were married on December 12, 1959 at the Conestoga United Church of Christ in Conestoga. They are the parents of Jeffrey, of Conestoga, and Jodi, wife of Brent Cook, Sykesville, MD. They are the proud grandparents of Christopher, Joshua, Luke and Carrie Cook.
