RUMFORD -- Neil Ward was pleasantly surprised by the reception he got Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the River Valley Chamber of Commerce's Information Booth beside Route 2.
Ward, program director for the Androscoggin River Alliance in Lewiston, brought with him 100 copies of the nonprofit organization's new full-color map.

In a general election that followed primary results, Bill Ward kept his District 2 seat on the Port of Camas-Washougal board by beating Neil Cahoon.
Ward was well in front in the Tuesday ballot count 4,398 to 2,597 for 62.5 percent of the vote.

In the Nov. 8 general election, incumbent Camas-Washougal Port Commissioner Bill Ward will face off against pilot Neil Cahoon.
In early returns, Ward took 62.08 percent of the vote, while Cahoon claimed 26.80 percent. A third challenger, David Luse, received 9.79 percent of the votes cast.

The Androscoggin River has been a part of Neil Ward's family for four generations.
Ward, who is program director for the Androscoggin River Alliance, will give a presentation about the river at a meeting of the Stanton Bird Club, a conservation organization, at 7 p.m. Monday at the Auburn Public Library.

It's all about the drums.
Sure, it's great to hear a songwriter in a solo acoustic format, but if the songs aren't simply outstanding -- like, say, on the level of Dylan, Springsteen, Neil Young, Chris Whitley, M. Ward, A.A. Bondy and a few others -- things can get pretty boring pretty fast. Same thing applies if your ax happens to be a piano. Unless you're Keith Jarrett or someone on his level, these kind of gigs start to feel more like stuffy recitals than concerts. (Bruce Hornsby is one of the few guys who has managed to pull off the one- man piano show successfully, if success is judged by the level of excitement created and maintained.)
