  • Think of them all For all who complain about the cost of living, the leaders of our country, their neighbors, their pets and other petty grievances, I recommend that you read "The Good Soldiers" by David Finkel.

  • In 1960, Jube B. Shiver Sr. dreamed of building a community with close-knit neighbors who would watch one another's children and pets, care for their homes and gardens and enjoy amicable neighborhood gatherings. Fifty years later, some of the original families of the community Shiver built, Randall Estates just south of Alexandria, are still living in their homes. An annual community picnic brings together new families with longtime residents, while homeowners often gather to admire one another's yards and help one another through winter or summer storms.

  • FINDLAY, Ohio - Firefighters and a volunteer armada navigated boats through streets awash in waist-deep water Wednesday, plucking neighbors and pets from porches as flooding that has swamped the Upper Midwest and Plains settled in Ohio. The water forced at least 500 people to flee their homes in several northern Ohio towns. Rising water forced authorities to move about 130 inmates at the county jail in Findlay to a regional prison.

  • Living side by side in apartment buildings or in private homes on closely spaced suburban lots often leads to conflict between neighbors. The list of conflict triggers is long, but pets behaving badly and owners who can't control them are often at the top of the list. Dog barking complaints are so common that some jurisdictions have ordinances targeting this problem while others deal with this issue under general noise regulations. A process that works much better is mediation, writes Janice Arenofsky. She said that mediation produces better results than litigation because it can result in a plan that the pet owner agrees to implement to fix the problem.

  • Fireworks ban Tom Philips, the band director at Mayfair High School, would have us believe that the only way his school can raise funds to purchase his music, pay for competition fees, bus transportation and instrument repairs is to sell fireworks. Might I suggest that Mr. Philips consider alternative fund-raising methods that are just as profitable and less apt to be included and abused with imported, unlawful fireworks, not to mention the noise insensitivity to the neighbors and pets of his school's community? I support the Press- Telegram's endorsement of Measure D.

  • It is said, "good fences make for good neighbors." And good fences provide a margin of safety and security, as well. While keeping your children and pets on your property or a specified area a good fence also provides reverse safety by preventing other kids and pets from wandering into your yard where unsupervised activity could lead to injury and liability.

  • QWe live very close to a hotel and several cats have taken to frequenting our yard. They do not appear to have been neutered. How can I tell if they are strays or belong to somebody, and how do I keep them out of the crawl space under the front porch? AFirst, talk to your neighbors and the hotel to determine whether they are pets, strays or feral cats. Second, block the gaps in the house foundations; chicken wire works well and sprinkle mothballs in the crawl space and gaps as a deterrent.

  • Richard Poplawski discussed a "hit list" on an Internet radio show in the weeks before he allegedly gunned down three Pittsburgh police officers in an ambush at his Stanton Heights home, according to a police affidavit. The hit list included a Pittsburgh police officer, a black, a Jew, his ex-girlfriend, her parents and neighbors' pets, the affidavit states.

  • Many people believe nursing homes are where people go to die, and this is the greatest misconception about nursing homes. Adults of any age may require the 24/7 care of a nursing home after surgery, an injury, accident, stroke or heart attack. After recovery, many return to their own home. We're living longer, and it is estimated that anyone over 65 years of age will have a 43 percent chance of spending some time in a nursing home. Many caregivers believe their loved one will be miserable in a nursing home, and they feel guilty about making the decision. Admittedly, nursing home residents may miss their daily interaction with neighbors, friends, family and pets. However, the decision to select nursing home care is based on meeting the medical needs of the resident Nursing facilities pro...
