In a big move for a little-known company that went public a year ago, Polaris Acquisition Corp. of Fort Lee will take over Hughes Telematics Inc., the maker of navigation systems for Mercedes-Benz cars, for roughly $700 million.
The all-stock transaction will give Hughes, backed by Apollo Management LP, $140 million in capital to fund the company's growth. The Chrysler Group and Mercedes-Benz U.S.A. are expected to make Hughes' dashboard navigation systems standard in nearly all of their U.S. production by 2012, Hughes said in a statement Monday.

WASHINGTON - A new, ultra-fast wireless Internet network is threatening to overpower GPS signals across the U.S. and interfere with everything from airplanes to police cars to consumer navigation devices.
The problem stems from a recent government decision to let a Virginia company called LightSquared build a nationwide broadband network using airwaves next to those used for GPS. Manufacturers of GPS equipment warn that strong signals from the planned network could jam existing navigation systems.
