  • With minor levels of excess radiation detected in Tokyo and at two nearby U.S. military bases, alarm is building among Americans in Japan who fear the Japanese government and the U.S. military are underplaying the threat of contamination from four out-of-control nuclear reactors. The commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Japan, Rear Adm. Richard Wren, raised anxiety levels Tuesday when he advised residents of Yokosuka Naval Base, near Tokyo, to "limit outdoor activity" -- less than a day after he told a town hall meeting that radiation from the reactors wouldn't affect them.

  • Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

  • HONOLULU Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a weakened and outnumbered U.S. fleet limped north to confront a flotilla of Japanese ships advancing on the remote Pacific atoll of Midway. A Japanese victory would have cost the U.S. a strategically critical scrap of land between Hawaii and Japan, and could have decimated U.S. naval forces. Instead, the U.S. sank four Japanese aircraft carriers and snatched the military advantage from Tokyo.

  • Friday marks a significant milestone in America's longest war. Sixty years ago Friday, North Korea invaded its neighbor, the Republic of Korea, initiating what historian William Stueck describes as "an orgy of violence." Within 24 hours, the United States committed air and naval units to support the South Koreans. Within a week, American ground forces began arriving from Japan. President Truman and his advisers thought American intervention would quickly resolve the crisis, but the "police action" lasted more than three bloody years and resolved very few of the issues at stake. Both sides signed an official cease-fire in 1953, but continued fighting since then has killed more than 100 Americans, 500 South Koreans and more than 1,000 North Koreans. The recent sinking of a South Korean na...

  • We don't seem to get it You should have seen it. The Colorado College Tigers provided a weekend of world-class thrills and entertainment. After losing a heartbreaker on March 11, they came from behind to win in overtime the following night, 5-4. Lots of goals and heart-palpitating action. Then on March 13, they came from behind to win, holding off the vaunted Wisconsin Badgers in a game for the ages. They won the series, two games to one and now advance with a chance to win the NCAA tournament. What a performance.

  • At a time when the specter of a power imbalance looms large in Asia, the just-concluded visit of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda of Japan to India cemented a fast-growing relationship between two natural allies. The path has been opened to adding concrete strategic content to their ties, including by building close naval collaboration. The balance of power in Asia will be determined by events principally in two regions: East Asia and the Indian Ocean. Japan and India thus have an important role to play to advance peace and stability and help safeguard vital sea lanes in the wider Indo- Pacific region, marked by the confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
