These treasures are California's most iconic parks and recreation areas that were funded by a federal program called the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which is currently proposed to be cut by 90 percent in the House of Representatives' budget. ELLSWORTH, Maine -- The Nature Conservancy is expanding its presence in Maine's embattled groundfishing industry. For the past two fishing seasons, The Nature Conservancy has co- owned a commercial groundfishing permit that the organization and its partner, the Island Institute, have made available to local fishermen. A third organization, Penobscot East Resource Center, also owns a permit to allow fishermen in Maine to participate in the tightly regulated sector fishing for cod, flounder and other groundfish.
A prominent chemist spoke Thursday night to members of the West Virginia Nature Conservancy about the importance of creating balance between environment and business. Dr. Neil Hawkins, vice president of sustainability and environment, health and safety for Dow Chemical, spoke about a recent partnership between his company and the national Nature Conservancy. The partnership was made to help local businesses and corporations protect nature and invest in sustainable efforts, according to the Dow Chemical website.
The Nature Conservancy announced the acquisition of over 500 acres of land on Sodus Bay last week, thanks to a $1 million grant from the North American Wetland Conservation Act and $200,000 in donations from individual and corporate conservationists. The act is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to address protection of Great Lakes water, shoreline and wetland areas. Obtaining and protecting the Sodus Bay land known as Shaker Heights from development became one of the Initiative's top priorities, explained Executive Director Jim Howe of the Central and Western Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Beth Wheatley works hard and runs hard. She took both of her passions to New York as part of a Nature Conservancy team that competed in Saturday's New York City Marathon. Wheatley is director of government relations for The Nature Conservancy in West Virginia. She hopes to raise $15,000 through her participation in the 26.2-mile race. The national organization's goal is $200,000. The money Wheatley raises will go directly to projects in the Mountain State.
