A dispute between the state and the Poospatuck tribe escalated today, when a Senate committee recommended the state revoke its recognition of the tribe and increase efforts to collect cigarette taxes on Native American reservations. The Senate Standing Committee on Investigations & Government Operations issued the report recommending the state increase efforts to collect taxes from sales of cigarettes on Native American reservations to non-Native Americans.
Here's how area members of Congress voted on major issues in the week ending May 18. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT: Voting 222 for and 205 against, the House on May 16 approved a Republican bill (HR 4970) to renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through fiscal 2016 on a budget of $680 million annually. The western spur generally follows the boundary of Grand Canyon National Park. Another spur extends along I-40 from the southwest corner of the Navajo Reservation to include the City of Flagstaff. (Most of the area around Flagstaff is in District 1.) After Flagstaff (2006 est population: 58,213), the largest concentration of people is in the unincorporated community of Tuba City w...
