The National Urban League was founded in 1910 to address the needs of African Americans migrating north from the Jim Crow South in search of jobs and a better life. Unfortunately, one hundred years later, the doors of opportunity are not yet fully opened to people of color. And history remains one of our greatest teachers. As President Obama said in his historic 2008 speech on race, "...So many of the disparities that exist in the African American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow...That legacy helps explain the wealth and income gap between Black and White and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persist in so many of today's urban and rural communities.

As I hear the media refer to [Barack Obama] as a presumptive presidential nominee, I also hear the voice of New Jersey Congresswoman Mary Norton who, in 1925, became the first Democratic woman elected to the Congress and the first woman to chair a major committee. Norton served 13 consecutive terms and once replied to a condescending male colleague, "I'm no lady, I'm a member of Congress.
[Fannie Lou Hamer]'s and the Party's efforts, coupled with the bloody sacrifice of peaceful marchers across Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, helped secure the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which removed the most onerous barriers to Black civic participation in this country. That was history.
To that end, the National Urban League has invited Senators John McCain, R-Ariz., and Obama to join us August...

[Marc H. Morial] reflected, "[John W. Mack] has been so important for this city since 1969, and he's been so important for the National Urban League... He will go down in history as the best affiliate CEO in the history of the movement. You don't just replace a John Mack, he's an icon," Morial continued. "What you hope is that you can get someone who can build on what he's created and continue the strength and the visibility of the name and the brand of the organization and continue to be relevant and have impact on community issues." And that's just what Morial has done at NUL.
As an examination of our nation's progress, NUL released "State of Black America 2005." Morial explained, "By giving this report out each and every year, the information is clear, it's just the facts, and then w...

In 1903 when W.E.B. DuBois predicted that "the problem of the 20th century will be the problem of the color line," African-Americans had every reason to agree.
Seven years earlier, in a case originating in my home state of Louisiana, segregation and the since discredited doctrine of "separate but equal" were legalized in the Supreme Court's infamous Plessy v. Peiguson decision.
That outrageous decision set the stage for the civil rights struggles of the last century. It also helped give birth to two of the greatest defenders of equality in our nation's history - the NAACP, which was founded in 1909, and the National Urban League, which came into existence in 1910.

Dr. Marjorie Peebles-Meyers is named chief physician at Ford Motor Co. World Headquarters in Dearborn. She will hold the post until 1985. Dr. Peebles-Meyers overcame discrimination against women in general, Black women in particular, to achiveve a number of "firsts" during her long, distinguished medical career. A graduate of Wayne State University Medical School, after first being denied admission to Columbia University Medical School and beginning her study at Howard University Medical School, she became the first African American woman to serve as head resident at Detroit Receiving Hospital and established the first interracial medical practice in Detroit with Dr. Eugene Shafarman. In 1950 she broke the racial restriction barrier in Detroit Hospitals when she was granted full attendi...
