I could rattle off tomes of statistics about disparity. I could talk about the wealth gap, the job gap, the wage gap and the health gap. I could speak in erudite and intellectual terms about income, health and equality in America. But I don't have to: [Katrina] did that for me through images of people suffering. It was through reality's lens that Americans witnessed the tragedy not through a full-length movie or cheap sound byte.
I'm going to ask you to join me in a new campaign to end poverty and build wealth in America. This fall, the National Urban League will launch an economic empowerment tour. We are going to bring our message of jobs and housing, business development and financial literacy to communities across the nation. We're going to hold town hall meetingsand have workshops....

New York-based National Urban League will hold its Gulf Coast Economic Empowerment Tour in the New Orleans Marriott hotel's Preservation Hall Ballroom, 555 Canal St., from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Gulf Coast Economic Empowerment Program, created after Hurricane Katrina, is designed to help small and minority-owned businesses secure rebuilding contracts.

Our financial challenge must focus on improving our bottom line," said Morial. It requires building upon our past successes to ensure that future generations benefit from the sacrifice and struggle of previous generations.
"We've affected a very successful transition from two agencies that were administering the program in less than a 30-day period," said [A. Odell Richardson]. "We have almost 100 percent placement. Out of 140 (clients) we have 136 placed in training or employment opportunities. We anticipate a very successful administration of the program. From 1967 to 2005, the rate of increase of median income for black households outpaced that of white households - 44 percent to 21 percent. Still, blacks lagged behind whites by roughly $20,000 a year - $30,858 vs. $50,784. In other words, blacks made 60 percent of what whites did in 2005, compared to 51 percent in 1967. Homeownership by blacks hit an all-time high in 2004 at 49.1 percent, but still well behind the 76 percent for whites. And net worth is a mere one-tenth of whites.
The city ranked 50th among the 70 U.S. cities for black homeownership in 2000, with only 34.5 percent of the city's African Americans owning their own home, compared to 59.9 percent of whites.
