It was through reality's lens that Americans witnessed the tragedy not through a full-length movie or cheap sound byte. I'm going to ask you to join me in a new campaign to end poverty and build wealth in America. This fall, the National Urban League will launch an economic empowerment tour. We are going to bring our message of jobs and housing, business development and financial literacy to communities across the nation. We're going to hold town hall meetingsand have workshops....

New York-based National Urban League will hold its Gulf Coast Economic Empowerment Tour in the New Orleans Marriott hotel's Preservation Hall Ballroom, 555 Canal St., from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. From 1967 to 2005, the rate of increase of median income for black households outpaced that of white households - 44 percent to 21 percent. Still, blacks lagged behind whites by roughly $20,000 a year - $30,858 vs. $50,784. In other words, blacks made 60 percent of what whites did in 2005, compared to 51 percent in 1967.
