The celebratory gathering in Chicago April 1 3- 14th that culminated the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' (CIW) "2007 McDonald's Truth Tour" demonstrated the moving solidarity that a social justice movement can achieve. The CIW, which represents the interests of primarily migrant tomato pickers in Florida, reached an agreement with McDonald's for a wage increase of one cent per pound of tomato for its workers (this should raise farm workers pay by more than ten dollars per day). As the National Labor Relations Act still does not cover farm workers, their ability to gain collective bargaining rights in most states is severely limited. Thus, the CIW had to achieve this victory by organizing and building a national coalition of community, religious, and union activists that threatened McDon...

In sharp contrast to the steady fall of the "left,", [Avigdor Lieberman]'s ultraright party, Israel Our Home, whose main constituency is among the Russian-speaking immigrants, won an astounding 11 seats on a platform which explicitly calls for denying Israeli citizens "the right to live in the state on the grounds of religion and race," as the Israeli commentator Akiva Eldar writes. Although other extremist parties that sat in the Knesset, like Rehavam Ze'evi's Moledet, have in the past advocated a similarly fascist agenda, this is the first time in Israel's history that any such party is embraced as part of the mainstream. "Lieberman's acceptance into the heart of the consensus," cautions Eldar, "is evidence of the moral degradation of Jewish Israeli society.

Marin has agreed to join San Francisco and other cities and counties as plaintiffs in the current lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of Proposition 8, which overturns California's Supreme Court decision to grant the right to same-sex marriage. The hotly contested proposition which passed with a 52.5 versus 47.5 percent vote statewide in the Nov. 4 election - was voted against by a substantial 74.94 percent of Marin County voters. A lawsuit challenging Prop. 8 was initially filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, National Center for Lesbian Rights and Lambda Legal on behalf of Equality California and six same-sex couples who didn't marry before the general election but would like to be able to do so now. A similar lawsuit was filed by the city of San Francisco, joined by the ...
