WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Last night, DFL candidate Terri Bonoff won a special election to the Minnesota State Senate to fill a seat vacated by Republican Governor Tom Pawlenty's new chief of staff. Bonoff defeated a popular Republican mayor in a Republican- leaning district by offering the voters a positive agenda of strong leadership based on solid Democratic values and priorities.
Terri Bonoff's victory shows that when Democrats show up and talk about what they believe in, they can win elections in any district in any state," said Democratic National Committee Spokesman Damien LaVera.

The sordid tale is captured in [Steve Bickerstaff]'s richly detailed examination of the events that gave rise to the "Killer Ds," Tom Craddick's election as Texas House speaker, the GOP's control of the state's congressional delegation, and [Tom DeLay]'s indictment and fall as U.S. House majority leader.
Several Republican senators told me in 2005 that they had received very clear messages, directly or indirectly, from these major donors in 2003 that the obstructionist Democrats had to go. These messages were delivered through telephone calls and personal visits," Bickerstaff writes. "The senators were certain to listen to these major donors because, in the 2002 election cycle, they [using the top 10 individual contributors to TRMPAC as a measure] directly gave Republican senators over...

It doesn't have to be this way. Don't despair and don't believe the cynical folks who say there is nothing we can do to increase the power of average folks and reduce the leverage of special interests. Often these naysayers have a stake in the current system or they are unaware of reforms in other states that are working. It's also easy to confuse prior piss-ant Texas reforms that didn't change the status quo much with fundamental reforms in other states that are making a real difference.
End sham issue ads such as TAB's corporate-funded direct mailers. At this point, we've all seen these so-called "issue ads" that usually attack candidates right before the election without actually saying vote for his or her opponent. A typical example is the TAB corporate-funded direct mailer sent out...

A quiet revolution is stirring in the country, and Taos County is an important reflection of this grassroots resurgence that is bringing together old-line Democrats and new Progressives. In just a few short weeks, what looked like a familiar, but bumpy road of political in-fighting in Taos turned into a free-flowing highway. This new brand of Democrat may spell trouble for candidates who still rely on old-style party politics that may be obsolete. Former Taos County Central Committee Chairman Billy Knight's success in bringing 65 percent of the county's registered Democrats to polls in the November 2005 election re-ignited the interest of old-line, "padrone" Democrats and energized the new Progressives who are more focused on national issues, such as the war in Iraq and health care. Whe...
