Rankings on the ease of doing business do not tell the whole story about an economy's business environment. Lhe indicator does not account for all factors important for doing business- for example, macroeconomic conditions, infrastructure, workforce skills or security. But improvement in an economy's ranking does indicate that its government is creating a regulatory environment more conducive to operating a business. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia many economies continue to do so- and economies in the region once again dominate the list of top Doing Business reformers in 2007/08. New this year: reforms in the region are moving eastward as 4 newcomers join the top 10 list of reformers: Azerbaijan, Albania, the Kyrgyz Republic and Belarus (table 1.1).

[]'s close relationship with [Kwame Nkrumah] drew his attention to Ghana and that provided the ultimate test of his "decolonization efforts," which until then, were largely in theoretical form. But when Ghana celebrated its independence in 1957, it was the first British colony to achieve that status, and that was due to the collaboration of Padmore's African Bureau and Nkrumah's Convention People's Party. He then became Nkrumah's most trusted representative. Two years later, as Padmore was attending a conference in Liberia, he fell ill. He was flown to London for medical treatment where he died in 1959. At Nkrumah's request, his ashes were flown to Ghana for a state funeral in Christianborg Castle, Accra; Nkrumah eulogized him, "There existed between us that rare affinity ...

[...] this culinary collective or relationship of plurality in planning, preparing, and presenting meals reinforced the complex nature of food and the ways in which the quotidian language of cooking performs as a crucial mode of communicating identities. According to Durodoye and Coker, this is most likely due to the racial politics in the United States that views people of African descent as a monolithic group.2 Arguing against the myth of homogeneity among and between people of the African diaspora, this article recaptures experiences that took place during the first five to seven years of my relationship with my husband (who today not only cooks for himself but also for our family), in order to consider some of the complexities that inhere in the homes of those living together acros...

In 1910, the Ghana Audit Service (GAS) was created in London as a colonial audit department. Originally called the Gold Coast Audit Department, it later became known as the Auditor-General's Department. The 1969 Constitution of Ghana extended financial and administrative autonomy to the agency and the 1972 Audit Service Decree established it as the GAS and strengthened its independence by establishing a seven-member Audit Service Board as its governing body. The GAS exists to promote good governance -- transparency, accountability, and probity -- in the public financial management system of Ghana by auditing the management of public resources in accordance with recognized international auditing standards and reporting to Parliament. With the assistance of the European Union, the GAS pre...
