  • That Britain is proposing the most radical reorganization of the National Health Service since its establishment in 1948 is significant and sobering -- but not surprising. Details of the plan are sketchy, but the aim is clear: shift control of England's annual $160 billion health budget from government bureaucrats to local authorities -- almost the precise opposite of what's beginning to happen here at home, post-healthcare reform. All this while Britain's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is trying to push through changes to medical practice aimed at saving money.

  • America's problem is much more insidious than the fact that many of its people believe the government will provide unlimited, free, on-demand health care. In fact, the predicate for their predicament as Americans -- much less as benefits professionals -- is already a done deal, not subject to the current "deliberations" in DC. If the Federal Council in the stimulus bill is the beginning of this idea, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is the realization of what it could -- and most likely will -- become. A group of presidential appointees will begin reviewing treatments to decide which are more -- or less -- effective. NICE guidelines center on cost effectiveness, not around quality of care. Furthermore, critics in the medical community are becoming concerned abou...

  • Government regulators in Britain are asking Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb to help pay for their leukemia drugs. In a statement, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) took issue with price points on BMS's Sprycel and Tasigna -- telling Bloomberg that the drugs cost around $50,000 each for a year supply -- and said there wasn't sufficient evidence for recommending the drug to patients. In the US, Novartis has launched several Web sites to help patients cope with chronic myelogenous leukemia, and pay for treatment.

  • From Britain comes another reminder of why, despite its many problems, the U.S. system of health care is better than socialized medicine. A part of the bureaucracy in London known as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, or NICE for short, has made a preliminary decision that the benefits of a drug that at least temporarily stems the relentless progress of Alzheimer's isn't worth the cost. As reported in a recent Wall Street Journal story, if NICE chooses to affirm that decision after a hearing next month, people in Britain likely won't have access to the drug, known as Aricept.

  • This week marks the one-year anniversary of Obamacare, and there has been no shortage of Washington rhetoric on the goals of the legislation for the occasion: Bending the cost curve. Reducing health insurance premiums. Expanding the number of insured Americans. But as we mark this anniversary, it's important to note the other agenda that has been missed in the debates of the past two years: reining in our doctors. Look carefully at the legislation signed into law by President Obama last March, and you'll discover a not-so-subtle campaign to dramatically reshape the doctor-patient relationship. From compensation to autonomy, Obamacare represents something of a war on doctors. Skeptical? Consider key aspects of the legislation. The newly established Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Inst...
