New York is facing a budget gap more than twice the amount of ours. Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Vermont and Wisconsin all must slash budgets by more than 20 percent. California shut down government. Kansas missed payroll. Unlike New Jersey, at least 18 states implemented cuts affecting low- income children's or families' eligibility for health insurance. For example, Rhode Island eliminated health coverage for 1,000 lowincome parents.
Unlike New Jersey, at least 18 states implemented cuts affecting low- income children's or families' eligibility for health insurance. According to national statistics, we would have had no job growth at all over the last three years if it had not been for increased government employment.

The Missouri economy peaked in Calendar Year 2007, but -- as with nearly all states -- Missouri is struggling against the tidal wave of the national recession. Missouri employment has been on a general decline since October 2007. According to US Bureau of Labor Statistics' data, through the twelve months ending November 2008, the state lost 23,200 jobs, a decline of 0.8%. Missouri's economic outlook over the next two years is similar to that of the nation, weighed down by the general outlook in the housing and automotive industries. Revenue forecasting is challenging under the best of circumstances, and becomes even more difficult when the questions become -- as it is for Fiscal Year 2010 -- whether a stumbling national economy will recover and when, and whether Missouri will lead or la...

The current research hypothesizes that high school club participation increases future earnings. The data used to test this theory is the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 cohort, rounds 1-20 (NLSY79) (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2004), which collected information on individuals from 1979 through 2002. Initially, the survey was conducted on a representative sample of 12,686 persons. These individuals were surveyed annually from 1979 until 1994 and biannually thereafter. The current study employs an OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regression model to assess the validity of the hypothesized conceptual model of the relationship between club participation and household income. The study shows significant findings that club participation correlates with higher future earnings of Americ...

This paper provides a review of the role of enterprise in a capitalistic setting to promote economic growth. For this purpose, two indexes on productivity and economic freedom were utilized to compare countries grouped by region and income. The finding by relating productivity to economic freedom index of the Heritage Foundation indicates a statistically significant relationship between the two. This gives credence to the hypothesis that economic liberalization induces growth, despite significant gaps in the levels of productivity and economic freedom index between groups of countries.

This study measures the impact of economic determinants on the international demand for tourist services in Portugal. A panel data set of 15 European countries over the period 1995-2003 is used. This article used appropriate panel data techniques of real per capita income, the price index of tourism service, geographical distance on demand for Portugal tourism services. In contrast to previous studies, this manuscript used a dynamic panel data to solve the problems of serial correlation and endogeneity. The estimate of the relative price elasticity of demand for Portugal's is 0.35 in the short run and 0.37 in the long run. The corresponding estimates for income elasticity on demand are 0.402 and 0.391 respectively.
