The National Federation of Independent Businesses and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say the health care reform bill, dubbed America's Affordable Health Choices, could have a devastating effect on the nation's smallest employers and derail the economy for decades.
House Bill 3200 falls short - and it's disheartening how people keep saying this is a great bill for small business. After reading the 1,000-plus pages, I can tell you that this bill has an employer mandate and payroll taxes that will depress jobs and wages," said Michelle Dimarob, manager of legislative affairs for the NFIB.

A guy named Mike Baldino from Fremont, Nebraska-he's a NFIB member-he owns Kelly Closure Systems. They make steel buildings and enclosures. He's a Subchapter S-his company is a Subchapter S. He's a Subchapter S CEO. You know what that means. It means when you lower income taxes at the individual level, it affects his cashflow. He saved $30,000 last year. He's a small-business guy, has 30,000 more dollars in his poeket. He says he's going to invest.

WASHINGTON, June 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a transcript of remarks by President Bush to National Federation of Independent Businesses (Part 4 of 5):
One of the challenges that we have as our economy shifts is to make sure that we have a skilled work force to fill the jobs of the 21st century. We're not going to be able to grow throughout the decades unless we make sure our work force can do the jobs that are being created. In other words, if you can't find workers to be able to do the jobs that are necessary to compete in the 21st century, you'll look elsewhere. And so one of the economic realities is to make sure the education system works well. And I've worked with Congress to pass the No Child Left Behind Act. It is a strong piece of legislation and I'll tell you why. ...

Colorado small business owners favor penalizing employers who hire illegal immigrants, privatizing some functions of state government and incentives promoting economic development.
The findings are part of this year's National Federation of Independent Businesses member survey. The NFIB asked the following questions this year:
-
About 1,200 small business owners will be asked their views on health care, tax credits for small business expansion, independent contractor status, state-run retirement plans for business owners and other topics.
-
Testimony will be heard today in federal court in yet another lawsuit that challenges the consitutationality of the health care reform law.
This time, the National Federation of Independent Businesses - the only business organization to file a suit - will argue that the federal government doesn't have the authority to mandate that individuals purchase health insurance.
-
Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are co-signing an amicus, or friend of the court, brief to be submitted to the federal court in Florida that will hear a constitutional challenge of the federal health care reform law.
The brief was initiated by U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and boasts signatures of 30 Senate Republicans. The lawsuit was brought by the attorneys general for several states and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, a small-business trade organization.

WASHINGTON, June 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a transcript of remarks by President Bush to National Federation of Independent Businesses (Part 3 of 5):
Since the beginning of 2001, real after-tax incomes, which are what people earn after inflation and taxes, have increased by 11 percent. (Applause.) That figure matters a lot. Let me see if I can put it in west Texas terms. That means you've got more money in your pocket. (Laughter and applause.) And it's your money to spend. You get to decide what to do with it, not the federal government.
