  • NATIONAL has surged ahead of Labour and taken a five-point lead in a Fairfax New Zealand/ACNielsen poll as the mood for change hardens. A dramatic seven-point swing in National's favour has come at Labour's expense, with yesterday's poll for The Daily News recording a drop in its support of five percentage points on last month's Fairfax poll.

  • BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi authorities set Jan. 30 as the date for the nation's first election since the collapse of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and pledged that voting would take place throughout the country despite rising violence and calls by Sunni clerics for a boycott. Farid Ayar, spokesman for the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq, said voting would push ahead even in areas still racked by violence - including Fallujah, Mosul and other parts of the volatile Sunni Triangle.

  • WASHINGTON - The House voted Thursday to oppose any efforts to postpone this year's presidential election due to terrorist threats or attacks. Lawmakers voted 419-2 for a congressional resolution from Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, that says no agency or individual should be given authority to postpone the date of a national election, which will be held this year on Nov. 2.

  • HELEN CLARK and her Finance Minister, Michael Cullen, have a 16- 2 advantage over Don Brash and John Key. This year's election will be the Labour pair's 17th in total, and the last three in tandem as prime minister and deputy. In contrast, Dr Brash and Mr Key have the experience of just one campaign each. The National duo might have had careers and success in the much-quoted real world, and perhaps a measure of public admiration for surrendering better-paid jobs to make their mark in politics, but it is a craft in which experience is invaluable. And triply so at election time. Mere connection with the mythical mainstream New Zealand will not be enough on its own for National. The Clark-Cullen team is on the brink of achieving what they only dreamed of in their early political lifetimes ...

  • We had reversed the recession, avoided a depression, got the economy moving again. . . . But over the last six months, weve had a run of bad luck. President Obama, Decorah, Iowa, Aug. 15 WASHINGTON A troubled nation wonders: How did we get mired in 9.1 percent unemployment, 0.9 percent growth and an economic outlook so bad that the Federal Reserve pledges to keep interest rates at zero through mid-2013 an admission that it sees little hope on the horizon? Bad luck, explains our president. Out of nowhere came Japan and its supply-chain disruptions, Europe and its debt problems, the Arab Spring and those oil spikes. Kicked off, presumably, by various acts of God (should He not be held accountable too?): earthquake and tsunami. (Tomorrow: pestilence and famine. Maybe frogs.) Well yes, b...

  • KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Monday set Jan. 21 as the date for long-overdue legislative elections in what senior officials said was an attempt to give militants a strong incentive not to disrupt Israel's Gaza withdrawal. Abbas' main political rival, Hamas, will compete in national elections for the first time, and is expected to make a strong showing. With an election date set, Hamas is less likely to do anything that could harm its popular support, including attacks on Israeli troops that would trigger a large-scale Israeli offensive in Gaza.
