  • As the national economy staggered in 2011, one industry may have fared better than most. Good times or bad, you always need an accountant, or so the old adage goes, and for Paul Becht, a partner in Holtz Reminick Rubenstein's Melville office, that's true - to a point.

  • The good news is that "The Debt" has nothing to do with the national economy. The bad news is that the film's deficiencies begin with its uninformative name. Granted, "Nazi Gynecologist" would have been problematic, but shouldn't a movie that casts Helen Mirren as a scar-faced secret agent bear a more interesting title? A remake of "Ha-Hov," a 2007 Israeli film that never reached American theaters, "The Debt" is a decades-spanning story of political intrigue and ethical dilemmas involving a team of Israeli spies charged with capturing one Dieter Vogel, a Nazi war criminal known as "the Surgeon of Birkenau" for the hideous, Mengele-like experiments he performed on concentration camp prisoners.

  • According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the national economy grew at an anemic annualized rate of 1.3 percent in the spring quarter. The good news, such as it is, is that economic growth of any kind means we're technically not in a recession, at least as such things are defined by economists. The bad news is that it's pretty cold comfort to more than 25 million unemployed or under-employed Americans and the over 60,000 unemployed West Virginians.

  • Seneca says the state and country can weather the subprime storm and avoid a recession. "New Jersey's economy is heavily influenced by the national economy," he says. "The positive news there is that the unemployment rate is still relatively low, and the weakness in the American dollar [driven to some degree by subprime fears] has made U.S. products more affordable in the international market, and the resulting climb in exports has been good for our economy. [...] some nonbank financial institutions may help to pick up the slack, says Michael Coiley managing director of the New York-based hedge fund Ram Capital Resources LLC and a member of the executive committee of the Commercial Finance Association, a New York City-based trade group representing the asset-based financial services in...

  • The national economy may have begun to drag itself gradually into recovery mode, but the Coachella Valley's commercial real estate sector will be slow to feel the benefit and realize much traction, say local experts, with high unemployment and low consumer spending keeping business owners in survival mode. Oversaturation and a lack of demand are major obstacles to a recovery, adds Spinello, who is one of the desert's best-known names in commercial real estate services. [...] we have seen more inquiries already this year than over the previous six to nine months.

  • DAYTON -- The loss of several longtime retailers provide a realtime example of the complex effects of local and national economic pressures on small businesses. Among the most notable, Doebler's Bakery in business for 46 years; Tommy Tucker Flower Shop which operated for 50 years; and Sherer's Ice Cream, which was around for 60 years; have all closed since April. McCallisters Art Supply, which has been in business for 54 years, is in the middle of its liquidation and plans to close its doors for good in October.

  • Despite a flat national economy and drop in charitable giving experienced by many nonprofit organizations, things were decidedly brighter in 2011 for The University of Kansas Endowment. University officials on Friday reported KU Endowment distributed $112.3 million in direct financial support to various facets of the university during fiscal 2011, which ended June 30.

  • The National Labor Relations Board functions in relative obscurity, drawing scant attention beyond management and union types who focus on industrial relations and labor issues. Even members of Congress generally pay little heed, while the public ignores it. But a recent NLRB ruling looms large in the presidential campaign that's getting under way.
