NEW YORK - Goalie Tim Howard of Germantown, who plays for the Everton Football Club in England's Premier League, was one of three goalkeepers selected Tuesday to the 30-man preliminary roster for next month's World Cup soccer play. The Swiss Confederation (Switzerland) has never had just one language. Founded in 1290 as cantons in the Holy Roman Empire, the Swiss Confederation gained independence in 1648. At first composed of German cantons, eventually French and Italian speaking peoples joined the confederation. For centuries, the Swiss Confederation has been able to hold together against all of the incessant wars, massacres and national divisions that had continually engulfed the European continent.
