The quaking U.S. market for subprime mortgage loans is rattling National City Corp. too.
The parent of National City Bank of Pennsylvania has decided it won't try to sell $1.6 billion in subprime loans after all, due to "adverse market conditions," National City said in a securities filing Thursday. The loans "are currently not saleable at what management considers an acceptable price," the bank said.

First Niagara Financial Group said Tuesday that it had successfully completed its purchase and conversion of 57 branches in Western Pennsylvania from National City Bank, giving it the No. 4 market share in Pittsburgh overnight.
The previously announced acquisition represents First Niagara's first presence in another state, and brings it into its largest market to date. Of the total, 50 branches are in the Pittsburgh market, with another six in the Erie, Pa., area, and one in Warren, Pa.

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. must sell 61 National City Bank branches in Western Pennsylvania as a condition of acquiring the Cleveland-based bank, antitrust enforcers said Thursday.

First Niagara Financial Group Inc., future owner of 57 National City Bank branches in Western Pennsylvania, said today it leased two floors in the 11 Stanwix Street building, Downtown, for its new local headquarters.
Some of the initial 100 employees to staff the headquarters have started to move into the 17th floor in the building on a temporary basis, while work is under way on the 15th and 16th floors, which will be First Niagara's future home, said Aaron Stauber, president of Rugby Realty Co., the building's owner.
