It used to be enough when all else failed to simply run away and join the circus. And in today's mediocre hiring environment, it turns out the circus may still be a reliable source of job openings.
There's lots of employment opportunities in this field. It's an unusual field, admittedly, but we offer a very unusual training," said Marc Lalonde, the executive director of the National Circus School in Montreal, one of North America's top schools for the "circus arts.

The parade of "family values" Republicans caught in sex messes has become almost a national circus. But South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford added amazing stupidity to his fling. He vanished for a week, while his staff put out a fake story that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Finally, Sanford reappeared and confessed that he skipped Father's Day with his four sons and wife so he could visit a lover in Argentina.
Few West Virginia politicians would think they could get away with a weeklong disappearance. Remember what happened when former Supreme Court Justice Spike Maynard went to the French Riviera with Massey's CEO, and photos became public?

David Shiner, the first American writer and creator of a Cirque du Soleil show, has roots in the Washington area where he attended junior high school - but his real education was the world.
The theatrical bug bit him hard in the sixth grade, playing the role of Bob Cratchit in "A Christmas Carol." Much later, in 1981, he took off for Paris to be a street mime - an honorable profession on the Continent, where he ended up spending most of his adult years. In time, he appeared with the German Circus Roncalli and the Swiss National Circus, known as Circus Knie.

Parents who dutifully sent their fifth-graders to Totoket Valley Elementary School last week found their children were bringing home some unusual skills, such as juggling, plate-spinning, miming and acrobatics. With the help of the Long Island, N.Y.-based National Circus Project, more than 200 students got a sampling of life under the big top. Last week, a select group of 64 put on their own hourlong show before 600 students, teachers and parents.
It's an incredible experience for our fifth-graders," said Principal Nancy Brittingham. "It taps into skills they don't normally get to exhibit.
