There are plans to reopen the earthquake-damaged Washington National Cathedral on Nov. 12, it was announced on Tuesday, but to fully restore the building, tens of millions of dollars need to be raised. Three of the four spires of the gothic cathedral's central tower were damaged during the earthquake. Intricate stonework was shaken loose, and some fell onto the building's roof. Major cracks also formed in parts of the structure. Inside the cathedral, small pieces of mortar rained down from the 100-foot-high ceiling during the quake. Safety netting was stretched over the sanctuary as a precaution.
A 350-foot crane toppled at the National Cathedral on Wednesday morning, crushing several cars and damaging two buildings on the grounds, officials said. No one was seriously hurt in the accident, but the crane operator was taken to a hospital, cathedral spokesman Richard Weinberg said.

WASHINGTON - A longtime Episcopal priest who led the St. Alban's Parish in Washington has been appointed interim dean of Washington National Cathedral. The cathedral announced Wednesday that its governing board asked the Rev. Dr. Francis H. Wade to serve in a part-time role to help out until a new leader is chosen.

Steven M. Schwab, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's vice president for development, has accepted the position of director of external relations at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the RPO announced Thursday. He will oversee the Cathedral's communications team and operation of development efforts. As the chief development officer for the RPO, Schwab led a $4 million annual fundraising program. He will remain in his role as the RPO's chief development officer through early August.
