  • The 'Working Under Different Rules' project of the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc looked at other advanced countries to determine what labor market problems they shared with the US and what approaches they use to overcome such problems. Wage inequality, worker training and representation, income maintenance and social insurance systems, and incidence of poverty were compared. The US showed lower unemployment but suffered greater wage inequality, decline in worker representation, and extreme poverty. A study of foreign experience can help the US situation, the project concludes.

  • In accordance with the requirements of the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (44 U.S.C. chapter 35), the Board, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (the ``agencies'') may not conduct or sponsor, and the respondent is not required to respond to, an information collection unless it displays a currently valid Office of Management and Budget (OMB) control number. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), of which the agencies are members, has approved the agencies' publication for public comment of a proposal to extend, with revision, the Report of Assets and Liabilities of U.S. Branches and Agencies of Foreign Banks (FFIEC 002) and the Report of Assets and Liabilities of a Non-U.S. Branch that is Managed or...

  • Researchers of the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc undertook various experiments to determine the prevailing living conditions of the elderly in the US. One research indicated variations in capital appreciation for each generation. Home ownership levels were found to decline in the later years. Related studies also showed that there was a 35% chance that a 65-year old would enter a nursing home during the remainder of their life. Another study calculated the optimum retirement age to be 81 for men and 84 for women.

  • A study of price changes in the US pharmaceutical industry conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc (NBER) reveals a bias in the procedure used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to calculate the price index for prescription drugs. The BLS tends to sample more medium-age (4- to 10-yrs-old) drugs than new (0- to 4-yrs-old) drugs. Because new-drug prices grow 3.5% slower and medium-age drugs grow 2.5% faster than those of old (over 25-yrs-old) drugs, the BLS price index grew approximately 50% faster than the NBER's. New drugs play a significant role in the US drug industry.
