MILLINOCKET, Maine -- Stearns High School's highly publicized effort to attract Chinese students to campus this year may not have paid off enough to address its budget woes, but the addition of another exchange student through a more traditional channel has given the school's girls basketball team a major boost. Sigrid Koizar, a 5-foot-8 junior point guard from Vienna, Austria, who last August played for her country's under-18 national team at the 2011 FIBA European Division B Championships, has averaged more than 20 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists a game for the Minutemen this winter.
On Sunday, they opened the practice to high school students and sat down for an illuminating Q&A session afterwards. "It was exciting to see how the players get along on the court,'' said Azalea Barnes from New Town High School in Elmhurst, Queens. "I found out a lot of stuff my coach tells us to do, they actually do," said Nabila Maduvkl from Beacon High School in Manhattan. "He's always telling us to stop on the foul line. Sue Bird stopped on the foul line and made a great pass. He talks about baseline lay-ups. I saw Candace Parker take a girl baseline.''
LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Lakers reached a deal in principle with former Cleveland Coach Mike Brown on Wednesday to succeed Phil Jackson, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the Lakers hadn't made the official announcement. ESPN, which employed Brown as an analyst this season, first reported Brown had been hired.
Fact: Somebody somewhere likely is concerned - nay, downright annoyed - that National Basketball Association team owners and players are mired in an ongoing collective-bargaining dispute that forced league commissioner David Stern to cancel the first two weeks of the upcoming season and could result in additional missed games. Also fact: Despite working in a medium in which call-in verbal venting is both accepted and encouraged, sports talk radio host Steve Czaban has yet to hear from anyone with full blown angina. Or even mild indigestion.
The Penn State men's basketball team will face two Big Ten Conference opponents on national telecasts during the regular season, when the Nittany Lions entertain Ohio State on Feb. 14 on ESPN2 and Illinois on Feb. 24 on ESPN. Both games will be played at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park. The Nittany Lions open Big Ten play on Jan. 3 against visiting Northwestern. Overall, the Nittany Lions will play 15 games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament or NIT last season. A total of 19 regular-season games will be played at Jordan Center (complete schedule in Scorecard, C21). Chicago and Washington (Mo.) were ranked in a tie for first place in the University Athletic Association Preseason Coaches' Football Poll. Carnegie Mellon tied Case Western Reserve for third in the four-t...
I feel like I have the best team in the D-League, said Joe Berry, president of the Tulsa 66ers. Surprisingly, Berry isn't talking basketball. Sure, he may be confident in his basketball team, part of the NBA's National Basketball Developmental League, which will begin its second season in Tulsa in November. But when Berry says he's got the best team in the league, he's talking about his front office.
Duquesne University forward/center Kieron Achara was named to the 20-man roster of the Great Britain National Basketball Team, which was scheduled to open training camp today in Sarasota, Fla. The team will be pared to 12 players at the conclusion of the camp July 28. The team will compete to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Montclair Prep overcomes size disadvantage, losing last season's top player to play in three tournament finals. The Montclair Prep girls' basketball team doesn't exactly strike fear into opponents upon walking into a gymnasium, unless they are looking at veteran coach Bob Webb, a member of the 1972-73 UCLA men's basketball national championship team.
The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team defeated Bentley 71-63 Thursday night to advance to the NCAA Division II national championship game. The Broncos will play for the title against Indiana of Pennsylvania on Saturday in Springfield, Mass.
That national championship squad has fallen through the cracks and hasn't been inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame. Before the University of Wyoming's 1943 NCAA national championship basketball team, there was the 1934 title team.
