Monsignor Slade Catholic School was named one of five recipients of the National Catholic Educational Association's 2011 Distinguished Home and School Association award.

Those efforts received national attention during the SCI Annual Hunters' Convention in Reno, Nev., Jan. 25-29. During an awards dinner Jan. 26, SCI Foundation President Joe Hosmer presented WNY SCI Chapter President Marvin Winter with the Diamond Conservation Award for the chapter's many building and public service programs that benefit not only hunting but all outdoors interests in and around Western and Central New York.

Chief Master Sgt. Dwight "Chris" Martin, a Severn resident, recently received the Blacks in Government 2010 Meritorious Service Award. The award honors military members and Department of Defense civilian employees who significantly contribute to the overseas contingency operations through outstanding support to the mission of their organization and who demonstrate role model qualities and core values of their respective military service.
Martin, who serves as the D.C. National Guard State Equal Employment Manager, was presented the award at the Defense Department Forum and Awards Program in Kansas City, Mo., for his outstanding accomplishments in human relations, equal opportunity and civil rights.

Nikki Shah, 15, daughter of Vipul and Cynthia Shah of Cordova, earned the Five Year National Award from the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She performed 10 memorized pieces each year for five years in Germantown's Piano Guild Auditions, where she earned superior ratings. She received the guild's five-year pin and a porcelain bust of Bach from her teacher, Benita Pepper of Lakeland.
Shah is a sophomore at St. Benedict at Auburndale School and a member of the Key Club. She has a 4.4 GPA in all honors and Advanced Placement classes, with the highest average in Latin. She earned honors in geometry at the Christian Brothers University math competition.
