The move comes six weeks after the Sept. 9 death of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, who denounced the teachings of his famous father, Elijah Muhammad, when he took over the helm of the organization in 1975. The reforms, which included renaming it the World Community of Al Islam in the West (and later American Muslim Mission), relaxing its dress code, removing its paramilitary infrastructure and renouncing whites, as "blue-eyed devils," were replaced with efforts to move the faith toward orthodox Islam. The measures angered some converts of the man they called "The Messenger," and according to a 1996 NOI press release "disoriented many of the followers and led to the Nation's financial ruin.

The Muslim orator, wearing white garments and looking the picture of health, made known his intentions to a small group of Black reporters inside the lavish confines of his sprawling estate on the city's South Side, in advance of Sunday's service. Located a block away from Obama's Hyde Park mansion, [Louis Farrakhan]'s estate resembles a palace with its winding driveway, majestic fountain and expert landscaping, including hedges sculpted to resemble gigantic, green marshmallows.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a former NOI member said, "We don't know what anyone's intentions and what the true impact will be on the masses, if any. If this happens then what the Minister is doing is exactly with the Imam attempted in '75," he said referring to [Warith Deen Mohammad], who drew tens of t...

Saviours' Day is usually held in Chicago, where the Nation's headquarters is located, but it is fitting that the event be held in Detroit this year. The Nation of Islam was founded in Detroit in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad with the goal of uplifting the spiritual, social, and economic lives of Black men and women. After Muhammad disappeared mysteriously in 1934, the Hon. Elijah Muhammad took over the reins of the organization. Under his leadership and that of Malcolm X, the organization reached international prominence. After Elijah Muhammad's death in 1975, his son Warith Deen Muhammad moved away from the Nation's original purpose, opening the organization up to whites and renaming it the American Muslim Mission. In 1979, Min. [Louis Farrakhan] broke away from the Mission, re-establi...

Putting Sister Claudette on the Commission -- Mr. [Rod Blagojevich] claims not to have been aware of it -- was an error which ought to have been rectified the moment it was discovered. Yet instead, the governor asserted, when Sister Claudette's leadership role in the Nation of Islam became public news, that he does not believe "in guilt by association".
It's not the association with anti-Semites, racists, and gay-bashers which is as offensive as her leadership role in the Nation of Islam. That's guilt by membership -- and that's something which we firmly believe cannot be dismissed.

Membership rolls surged in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as many young African Americans began to question the wisdom of the late civil rights leader's philosophy of civil disobedience and passive resistance. The U.S. government came down hard on the Panthers, using the FBI's Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO), along with local authorities, to discredit, imprison and otherwise neutralize its members and sympathizers. Scale himself spent over two years in jail on a variety of charges, and was ultimately vindicated in each case.

Turkey has been undergoing major democratic transformations in recent years, but one issue remains in question: the role of the military. Have these democratic changes also included an irreversible, structural change for the Turkish military's political role? Are the Turks reconceptualizing their special bond with the armed forces and most importantly, is the military leadership ready to go along with this paradigm shift? This article first provides a typology of civil-military relations worldwide and identifies the main parameters of traditional Turkish civil-military relations as a system in which society maintains a direct, special bond with its military, keeping politics and politicians in a secondary position. It then suggests that this pattern is shifting into a more democratic on...
