The announcement last week that Nathan Lane will return to Broadway in a revival of Simon Gray's dark comedy "Butley" adds one more dimension to a fall theater season that's shaping up as tantalizingly diverse.
In a departure from his last two comedy hits, "The Producers" and "The Odd Couple," Lane will play the multilayered role of a British professor of literature whose world is collapsing around him.

Match Point: A former tennis pro (Jonathan RhysMeyers) falls for a femme fatale (Scarlett Johansson) who's dating his soon-to-be brother-in-law. Woody Allen's film lacks originality, but it's a diverting story of crime, love and luck. (M.B.)
The Producers: In this adaptation of Mel Brooks' Broadway musical, a producer (Nathan Lane) and his accountant (Matthew Broderick) dream up a theatrical get-rich-quick scheme. Susan Stroman's direction leaves much to be desired, but the over-the-top performances help sell Brooks' shtick. (S.D.)
Where Is the Friend's Home?: The UW Cinematheque's "Good Childhood Film Series" features Abbas Kiarostami's 1987 Iranian film about an 8-year-old trying to return a schoolmate's notebook.

All the people who are being paid to teach people how to act were like "huh?" So, I do a lot of vocal method classes, but this is going to be a musical theatre master class. At the end of the show, when the gate opened, and all of these people that I knew - heroes of mine - Betty Buckley, Nathan Lane, Bernadette Peters, people like that, were at the gate and they all wanted to see me. [...] from 1982-1986 it was sort of the hub for artistic endeavors, especially for gay people.
