The Jazz Museum in Harlem will begin their fall 2005 lineup "Harlem Speaks" series (free to the public) with Max "The Sax" [Nathan Lucas] on September 8. Lucas is a true jazz trailblazer, who has been setting the jazz standard for the last seven decades, having performed with Count Basie and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, under the direction of Mercer Ellington.
The book serves as a compass through the evolution of jazz, from its roots in the rhythms of Africa to the avant-garde jazz improvisations of today. It also examines the impact of jazz on American culture, including literature, film, television and dance. There are also profiles of the major influential jazz divas Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Bessie Smith; and jazz musicians Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, ...

People don't realize the amount of work and effort to put this together," Dorsey said. "It is no small task and Dr. [Nathan Davis] is able to bring all these people together with their very busy schedules. It also points to the tremendous respect that all of the musicians have for Nathan as a performer and educator. They respect him on multiple fronts.
Dorsey's bass playing has energized jazz masters Lionel Hampton and Art Blakey with his Jazz Messengers as a member of their bands in addition to working with Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist, Cassandra Wilson. A composer and arranger, he has performed with Dizzy Gillecpie, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Jon Hendricks, Gloria Lynn, Dakota Staton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Dorothy Donegan, Stanley Turrentine, ...

If there's a Don Quixote of New Mexico water rights, his name is James Scott Boyd.
For two decades, Boyd has fought a battle he claims ruined his great-grandfather, Dr. Nathan Boyd, more than a century ago and led to New Mexico's losing control over Rio Grande water. He argues the federal government stole his ancestor's water rights at Elephant Butte and the state has failed to protect senior water rights.
... that dam, physician and engineer Nathan Ellington Boyd was asked by Lower Rio Grande farmers in New ...

A 10-year-old boy who fell through the ice on a Bartlett pond Thursday remained in critical condition at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center Friday, according to authorities.
Reese Wagner, a student at Bon Lin Elementary in Bartlett, could have been in the water for some 20 minutes. An expert on hypothermia said a plunge into icy cold waters can improve the chance of a child's surviving what might have been a fatal drowning.
..."Quinn said that he, Nathan (Ellington) and Reese all fell into the icy water,...

If this were a real '50s diner, in the South, [NATHAN JAMES] wouldn't have been seated. The fact that he sits here, unbothered, and as a star - though [Pamela]'s waitresses don't know it yet - is evidence of America's racial progress ... right?
You get snickers, especially at the high school matinees. But most of what I experienced was from older people, coming up to me saying, "I really loved it, but I don't know about the gay stuff." Well, if you do without the gay stuff then you do without a certain part of this man's life. It wasn't a play about a gay musician, it was about a musician who happened to be gay. People on the street would come up to me and mention the homosexual aspect of the play instead of learning about this man from Homewood who wrote over 70 percent of Duke Ellingt...

Winfield didn't pick up a victory in its season finale Friday at Spring Valley, but the night still proved to be memorable for a couple of Generals players.
Andy Ellington booted four field goals, giving him a state- record 14 on the season, and David Gaydosz eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark rushing, but the rest of the evening belonged to the playoff- bound Timberwolves, who pulled away late for a 49-20 victory.
