Addressing years of inactivity on numerous proposals to redevelop the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and its 77 acres of outlying property, County Executive Ed Mangano told a crowd of thousands gathered at the Coliseum on Wednesday his new plan to rebuild the aging arena was likely to come to fruition, as long as the voters agreed making a $400 million investment in economic development was necessary for the future of the county. Mangano was joined by New York Islanders' owner Charles Wang and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray in a showing of solidarity between the three entities that controlled the fate of the property as each lauded the new project that would keep the Islanders playing in Uniondale through 2045. The Islanders' current lease expires in 2015.
At Champions, framed jerseys of current and past Islanders greats decorate the walls beside sports pages recalling the Stanley Cup- winning glory days of the early 1980s. An emblazoned team logo anchors the floor as part of a mock hockey rink that fits four or five tables. For the 41 home games the team plays at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum across the street, this is the center of Islanders country. But for the time being, Champions, like many bars and restaurants near the arena, is depending on other ways to fill the tables and bar stools usually occupied by beer-drinking and chicken-wing- eating hockey fans. With the player lockout now a month old, there's a good chance the only hockey that Long Islanders will see for the rest of 2004 is at the college or high school level.

Islanders team owner Charles Wang launched yet another campaign this week to refurbish the aging Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Excuse Islanders fans if they roll their eyes. It's just that, well, they've heard all this before. The former Computer Associates chief wants to lower the arena's floor and add more seats. He also hopes to add an aquarium on the lower level and widen concourses around the arena. The concourses would then add restaurants and bars.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- They want bigger and better things than home- ice advantage through one playoff round, of course. Still, the Penguins have accomplished something fairly remarkable this season: They've impressed one of the world's richest men -- the team's majority co-owner, Ron Burkle. You guys have blown me away," he told defenseman Kris Letang after a 4-3 shootout victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The firm that manages the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum has significantly underpaid the county's share of revenue, County Comptroller Howard Weitzman charges in an audit due out Wednesday. Spectator Management Group, an alliance between hotel company Hyatt and food-service company Aramark, has overseen coliseum operations since 1991, when it took over a contract originally signed with Hyatt in 1979. The contract, due to expire in 2015, has previously come under fire from county officials, who deem the lease agreement as a giveaway for one of the nation's top-grossing arenas for non-sports events.
Before moving to Chesapeake six years ago, Joe Nash delivered mail in New York. The letter carrier's route included the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, home of hockey's New York Islanders. These days he is delivering something else in Great Bridge: fish, and lots of it. It's a seasonal role he enjoys - helping Catholics observe Lent.
If you book the Eagles - or Billy Joel or Alicia Keyes, for that matter - they will come. The much-maligned Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum may be a showing a touch of gray, but the 23-year-old venue ranks No. 10 in 2004 among arenas surveyed worldwide for ticket sales to concerts and entertainment events.
