A Nassau County state supreme court judge has awarded National Grid $1.3 million after ruling the utility paid fees for sanitation services in the Town of North Hempstead that it didn't need or receive, and barred such fees in the future.
Judge Thomas Feinman found National Grid predecessor Keyspan had been charged inappropriate fees for garbage collection based on property such as pipes on land it doesn't own.

A recent ruling by a Nassau County Supreme Court justice has effectively blocked an order by the county to shift charges for Fashion Institute of Technology subsidies of local students to the town and city municipalities.
In April, Nassau County notified the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, along with the cities of Glen Cove and Long Beach, that it would be shifting its share of subsidized costs for local students attending FIT in Manhattan to them. FIT is considered a community college, even though it offers baccalaureate and masters programs, and is required to receive reimbursements from municipalities with students attending the school.

This rule establishes air quality designations for all areas in the United States for the 2010 Primary Nitrogen Dioxide (NO<INF>2</INF>) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Based on air quality monitoring data, the EPA is issuing this rule to designate all areas of the country as ``unclassifiable/attainment'' for the 2010 NO<INF>2</INF> NAAQS. The EPA is designating areas as ``unclassifiable/attainment'' to mean that available information does not indicate that the air quality in these areas exceeds the 2010 NO<INF>2</INF> NAAQS.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A jail guard accused of killing her ex- girlfriend and uncle and injuring her elderly grandfather in a shooting rampage was ordered held without bail Thursday.
Kim Wolfe, 43, did not enter a plea on murder, kidnapping and assault charges at her arraignment, which was held amid extraordinarily tight security in Nassau County District Court. Judge Terence P. Murphy ordered her to remain behind bars until her next court appearance on Monday and issued two orders of protection on behalf of the relatives of the two slain victims.

A recent court decision in favor of the Town of North Hempstead has set the stage for an intermunicipal war between the town and Nassau County.
In a 2005 suit, Verizon claimed the town was unfairly charging sanitation fees on property inhabited by the multimedia giant's utility poles, cables and wires. Since these structures do not create waste, Verizon argued it was unreasonable to impose such fees. The state Supreme Court in Nassau County ruled in favor of Verizon, and ordered the town to refund Verizon $559,991.55 plus 9 percent interest a year for tax years 1994 through 2002.
