Child custody and visitation tends to be a contentious issue once it reaches court, but Nassau County Family Court officials are considering the use of mediation to help smooth out the process. Dan Weitz, the alternative dispute resolution coordinator for the New York State Unified Court System, is working with Nassau County Family Chief Clerk Rosalie Fitzgerald and Supervising Judge Carnell T. Foskey on the concept. Weitz said the idea is still under review and the court hasn't yet determined, for instance, whether to use a roster of lawyers or not-for-profit providers if it implements the program.

The Ethics Commission for the Unified Court System issued 49 Notices of Delinquency for failure to timely file complete financial disclosure statements for calendar year 2003, and four Notices of Delinquency for failure to timely re-file a statement that was returned for revision. One of the employees, Cheryl Coleman, Albany City Court judge, left her position with the Unified Court System without filing her statement. Another employee, Beverly BrittonFraser, associate court attorney TP, Kings County Civil Court, filed her 2003 statement in response to a Notice of Delinquency, but it was deficient and was returned for revision.
