Cold remedies
When you have a cold, drink plenty of liquids, which may help loosen congestion, suggests Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Fluids include water, juice, clear broth, chicken soup and warm water with lemon juice and honey. When you have a scratchy or sore throat, dissolve a half-teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of warm water and gargle with the warm salt water. When you have nasal congestion, use of nasal decongestants such as Afrin or 4-Way should be limited to no more than three consecutive days because longer use may have a rebound effect in which symptoms worsen when the medicine is stopped, Mayo Clinic said. Nonprescription saline nasal drops and sprays help to combat congestion without a rebound effect, Mayo said.

Dear Dr. Gott: I am a 79-year-old man who has a chronic runny nose, diagnosed as vasomotor rhinitis. An ENT doctor told me it is incurable. I have tried at least 10 different nasal sprays, the most recent being ipratropium bromide. It helped for a while but is no longer effective. Any suggestions?
Dear Reader: Vasomotor rhinitis occurs because the blood vessels in the lining of the nose swell. This stimulates the mucous glands in the nose, resulting in a chronic stuffy/runny nose .

Q: I've heard about becoming addicted to nasal sprays, but I wonder if one can become addicted to eyedrops. I have severe dry eyes along with allergies, and I need a dose of eyedrops first thing in the morning and several times throughout the day. Otherwise my eyes get horribly red, swollen and irritated. Am I addicted?
A: You may well be experiencing rebound redness from overuse of eyedrops. The same ingredient that is found in many nasal sprays is found in eye products that help get the red out.

WASHINGTON - Both seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu vaccines may be given to a patient at the same visit, as long as they're not both in the nasal spray form, health officials said.
The reason for not mixing the two nasal sprays is to ensure optimum immune response, according to Tom Skinner, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public affairs officer. If both vaccines are in spray form, they should be given a month apart.
