  • Dear Dr. Gott: In the late 1970s to early 1980s, I had symptoms of nasal polyps. I had to have them removed three times over a period of eight years. After the third removal, the doctor sent out a biopsy. The growth was determined to be an inverting papilloma. My doctor then sent me to get an X-ray, and it was found that there was a tumor the size of a golf ball in my left maxillary sinus cavity. I was told that the "polyps" were its roots that were being sent out through my nasal cavity. They were growing back every time they were chopped off. I had to have facial surgery in 1986 to remove the tumor.

  • I'm sure that you are familiar with the fairy tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." As I recall, one of the dwarves was named Sleepy. It seems this little guy was always falling asleep, holding up the "Hi Ho" march. He should have scheduled an appointment to see his dwarfmate Doc. If he visited my office, I probably would have diagnosed him with sleep apnea. The diagnosis of sleep apnea is usually made in a sleep laboratory with instruments that monitor the heart, lungs, brain and blood gases. After the diagnosis is made, the condition can be readily corrected with the use of a nasal instrument that can deliver a continuous, positive air stream to the throat. This procedure, known as C-PAP, eliminates snoring and improves oxygen going to the brain. If this treatment is not successful...

  • Two-thirds of partnered adults say their partner snores, while 59 percent of all adults say they snore, according to the National Sleep Foundation's 2005 "Sleep in America" poll. Snoring occurs when the air passages become obstructed and air cannot flow smoothly through them. Obstructions can be caused by an upper respiratory infection, an allergy, a deviated nasal septum or even nasal polyps. An unhealthy lifestyle can compound the problem.

  • I'm sure that you are familiar with the fairy tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." As I recall, one of the dwarfs was named Sleepy. It seems that this Uttle guy was always falling asleep, holding up the "hi ho" march. I am sure that Sleepy would have been as happy as his dwarf-mate Happy if this diagnosis had been made and treated. He could have enjoyed the company of Snow White, along with that of the other six dwarfs, who could have enjoyed sleep without his snoring. I'm sure the next day, all seven dwarfs would be a happy bunch as they sang, "Hi ho, hi ho, off to work we go," and Snow White would be more at ease! Sleep apnea can also be caused by an obstruction in the throat or nasal passages due to a deviated septum in the nose, allergic nasal polyps, enlarged tongue or an enlarg...
