When I was living in Europe with my family in the mid-1970s, we often rented houses on Greek islands. We relished being able to unpack and unplug, to fall into the rhythm of island life, to walk on the beaches, wander through the villages and wind down the day with a cool white wine and a warm pink sunset.
When we returned to the United States, we looked for a place that resembled a Greek island but wasn't Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. A friend mentioned Pawleys Island, on the South Carolina coast, which is not really an island at all but a glorified sandbar separated from the mainland by a narrow salt creek and a milewide mind-set.

The managers of the Town Ballroom in downtown Buffalo have purchased their building and property on Main Street and paid off a city loan, with the help of an independent concert promoter from Nantucket Island acting as an angel investor.
Shadigee Properties LLC, an entity registered to music promoter John Peters of Nantucket, off Cape Cod, Mass., paid $622,000 to purchase the property at 681 Main St. from MJG of Buffalo, according to Erie County Clerk records.

RUMFORD -- Robert Joseph Gotto, 81, of 146 Swett Ave., Mexico, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 26, at Rumford Hospital with his loving wife by his side.
He was born on May 16, 1929, in Newark, N.J., the son of Katherine Gotto Thomas and attended local schools in Rumford and graduated from Nantucket High School, Nantucket Island, Mass., in 1948.

A Maine island could be the perfect proving ground for emerging technologies such as the electric car. With a little help from state and federal energy grants and private money, electric cars could be tested on one of Maine's islands with a year-round population. Even if the results do not clearly suggest the technology is appropriate for mainland use, islanders might find the electric car is the perfect fit for the necessarily short trips that come with island life.
