An Oklahoma nanotechnology company has taken another step toward raising capital for its development of medical devices that provide targeted delivery of therapeutics.
NanoBioMagnetics Inc. (NBMI) in Edmond develops magnetically responsive nano-particles - the tiniest of particles that can be attached to a therapeutic and drawn to a specific spot in the body needing attention, such as a cancerous area. The company also is using nano-particles for hearing amplification technology.

Nanotechnology has found itself under a magnifying glass this month in Oklahoma.
Nanotechnology, which uses materials at the tiniest of scales - one nanometer is about 40,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair - continues gaining a stronghold in Oklahoma. On Jan. 14, the annual NanoFocus conference will feature many of the nearly 60 local companies that have used nanotechnology to better their products, along with a national leader in the field. A few weeks later, on Jan. 26, statements of intent are due for companies that want to nab some of the hundreds of thousands in state money available to help them incorporate nanotechnology into their work.

Jim Mason, who championed nanotechnology for years as a staff member at The State Chamber of Oklahoma, has left the organization to start his own company.
Mason said the decision was mutual. When the chamber focused more of its efforts on lobbying, he decided he would rather concentrate on economic development and public awareness of Oklahoma's nanotechnology companies.

For a person whose life revolves around the minutia of nanotechnology, Jim Mason sees the big picture for its future in Oklahoma.
Mason, executive director of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative, a program of The State Chamber of Oklahoma, is dedicated to connecting companies with the nanotechnology that can help them create better products. The initiative is about to go into its fourth year of funding Oklahoma companies with $1.5 million allocated by the Legislature.
