WASHINGTON - The surge in the number of veterans suffering post- traumatic stress disorder requires development of better tests to evaluate affected personnel and determine how best to compensate them, a panel of medical experts said Tuesday.
As the increasing number of claims to the VA shows, PTSD has become a very significant public health problem," said Nancy Andreasen, chair of the committee that prepared the report.

PA (traditional public administration) can get better at what it does badly -- creating, out of the ordinary -- by not staying the course. PA thinking, PA practice, and PA education need a 12-step program, parallel to Alcoholics Anonymous. Lack of extraordinary creativity is an addiction. Lack of extraordinary imagination is harmful to self and others. Individuals and organizations should turn to Uncreatives Anonymous, often known as Unimaginatives Anonymous. But modifying the 12 steps is suggested. These include: 1. admitting that you work in a subject (PA) that is powerless over uncreativity, 2. helping PA to come to believe that powers greater than themselves could restore them to sanity, 3. making a decision to turn their will and their lives over to higher powers, 4. adapting the f...

NEW YORK - A respected brain-imaging center run by Columbia University has halted some research after federal officials repeatedly complained that patients were getting drugs that failed purity tests.
The Food and Drug Administration found in a series of inspections that the center had failed to correct manufacturing problems in a lab that makes experimental drugs injected into psychiatric patients to help capture images of brain activity.

Epistemic pluralism that includes neuroscience is recommended for getting Public Administration (PA) into perspective. These terms are explained and illustrated. Epistemic refers to knowing, and pluralism refers to a strategy of more then one way. Neuroscience concerns study of the brain and the central nervous system and the relation of brain functioning to such activities as behaving, thinking, remembering, feeling, deciding, and judging. It is indicated why a turn to neuroscience is important for PA. It is suggested that epistemic pluralism is the optimal approach for using neuroscience, and implications are indicated. The turn should not abandon approaches like the hermeneutic.
