This week Penn's Annenberg Center brings in one of the nation's edgiest dance companies: Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Boasting an almost unparalleled capacity to blend classical, jazz, modern and contemporary styles, the company of 21 dancers is known for its versatility and theatricality. Hubbard's program includes Spanish choreographer's Nacho Duato's masterpiece Gnawa and German choreographer William Forsythe's groundbreaking work Enemy in the Figure. Mysterious and provocative, Forsythe's piece for 11 dancers looks at our attempts to manage in the technological age. Full of eye-popping images, Enemy includes an especially strident section in which dancers leap over a rope while dodging a roving floodlight. The intricate patterns created by dancers disappearing and reappearing in bu...
After graduating from USF in 2005 he made Brooklyn, NY his home and continued to study with the Alvin Ailey School as an Alvin Ailey scholar and was privileged to perform the works of Troy Powell/Hans Van Manen, Nacho Duato, Jacqulyn Buglisi and Ronald K. Brown. He attended Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Contemporary Traditions Program, in 2006 as a full scholarship recipient performing works by Robert Battle, Ohad Naharin and Elisa Monte. He appeared in productions of NEFERTITI with Big League Productions.
The Washington Ballet's "Genius!" program was such a smash hit last winter that Septime Webre, the company's director, promptly planned a repeat of the idea. It lives again as "Genius2," opening tonight and running through Sunday at the Kennedy Center's refurbished Eisenhower Theater. Last year, three heavy hitters were represented: Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp and Christopher Wheeldon. Works by all three are back, joined by a fourth from the Spaniard Nacho Duato.

If local audiences have any difficulty remembering Larry Keigwin's last star turn at ADF, all they need to do is start humming Bill Withers' soul classic, "Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone)." His sinuous, self-choreographed solo was one of the high points of Mark Dendy's 2000 ADF world premiere, a rock and soul revue called I'm Going To My Room To Be Cool Now, and I Don't Want to Be Disturbed. In recent years, Tatiana Baganova and Sasha Pepelyaev have been staples of the festival's International Choreographers Commissioning Project--the program that unleashes dancemakers from around the world on advanced ADF students for six weeks and then puts what they come up with on stage. Mixed outcomes have been the result. Baganova's Wings at Tea was a funny and fierce exploration of Soviet fem...
