Award-winning investigative journalist and author Seymour Hersh will give a free lecture, "A Report From Washington," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in F&M's Barshinger Center for the Musical Arts in Hensel Hall. Hersh was a reporter for the New York Times from 1972-79. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his exposure of the My Lai massacre and cover up during the Vietnam War. The latest of his eight books, "Chain of Command," is based on his reporting on Abu Ghraib for The New Yorker.

Former Lt. Rusty Calley has finally spoken about the My Lai Massacre in terms of his remorse for the deaths of between 300 and 400 unarmed Vietnamese villagers who were slaughtered on one terrible day in March, 1968, 41 years ago, and his remorse for the ruined lives of American soldiers he and others ordered to do the killing. The slaughter in a poor, sandy village complex south of Chu Lai and just off Highway 1 was originally covered up by officers at every level in the 11th Brigade and the parent Americal Division. The cover-up came undone when an Army photographer took his photos and story to a budding muckraker named Seymour Hersh.
WASHINGTON -- Worried about flagging support for the war? The president tells his aides in a secret memo, "Publicly we say one thing; actually, we do another. That was not President Bush on Iraq, but President Nixon on Vietnam and Cambodia. It is only one line in some 50,000 pages of newly declassified Nixon-era documents from the National Archive. It is not surprising but still a little unsettling, to learn how often a president will dissemble with the people.
