We set off the next morning and soon get into a rhythm on this do-it-yourself canal. At first Em steers, proud to be the skipper of her own boat, and I jump off to prepare the locks. Sometimes the lock's ready so I just have to open the gates, but more often it has to be either emptied or filled. A special windlass is needed to operate the sluices, called paddles, at the bottom of the gates. Some of these turn easily, but more often it takes every ounce of my strength to move them even one ratchet, leaning my weight on the handle or getting on my knees to pull or push. After the first couple of turns it's easier. I can feel muscles in my arms, shoulders and abdomen I don't normally use. Better than a gym any day, and more fun. There's lots of rushing from one side of the lock to the oth...

Well, babies just about took the headlines out this way. My daughter's sister-in-law, Gail Smith, and her husband, Ray, are looking forward to twins. They just found out this week. Now get this, they've got two sons, one 20 and the other 15. The mom is 41, so there you go. Twins, twins, my goodness. Well after they got over the shock, they are delighted no doubt. I predict it's twin girls and you know I'm right good when it comes to babies. I miss once in a while, but not often. Well in a few months we will know. I wish Gail and Ray the best of luck. We are all hoping for the best, the babies are due this summer.
Last Friday night there was an appreciation party for the Rev. Jane Myers who has been the pastor for Corinth, White Oak and Trinity Methodist churches. She is retiring because...

In the 1970s, a psychology professor named Lee Campbell realized that she was suffering from mental health problems brought on by being forced to "surrender" her infant son when she was a high school senior in 1962.

Yesterday I experienced one of the proudest days of my life; a papa's dream as it were: walking my daughter down the aisle. It was earlier in the week when I had a revelation of the beauty and perfection of the moment that was yet to come. I was holding my two month old granddaughter, my youngest son's infant daughter in my arms. My heart went back to the days when I held my infant curly haired mi' ja, way back in the day when I was only in my mid 20's myself. Enamored with the beauty of life, God's magnificence in tiny Latina form, my eyes became warm with the tears I did not allow to fall, knowing that the day to give my daughter away was looming.
I have always prayed for my children to find the love of their lives, like I did. For me it was the second time around with the woman I cal...

The vaccine has merit, yes. Science has apparently provided a means by which many women will be spared HPV infection and potentially cervical cancer. But HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. It is not passed through casual contact, like measles, mumps, chicken pox or any of the other diseases for which mandatory vaccination makes sense. No matter how germ-infested my child's classroom is, one germ she won't catch there is HPV.
In the last month, Merck has retreated from its massive publicity and lobbying campaign. California tabled a bill to require HPV vaccination because it did not give parents enough of a voice in deciding whether their daughters should be vaccinated. The Texas attorney general has put on hold Gov. Rick Perry's executive decree for mandatory HPV vaccinations. Rep. ...

WEST CARROLLTON -- Becoming a first-time homeowner, Carolyn Lake was naturally excited to have a place of her own.
But she felt even more blessed that she will finally have a home that can accommodate her 23-year-old daughter, Paula, who is physically-disabled.

My daughter Cathy called from Boston the other day and was telling my wife she had eaten in the dark the night before. "What, she didn't pay her utility bill?" I wondered out loud.
No! It's a special meal you have to get invited to," my wife said afterward. "They blindfold you and you eat a meal in the dark.

Lola managed to hang on to life for 13 years after her diagnosis, but eventually the disease ravaged her body, mushrooming into full-blown AIDS to the point that she was unable to care for her twin daughters, entrusting them to other family members to raise. Her frustration about the disease lead her to abuse cocaine and marijuana. Her mother, Mrs. McGee, a nurse with over 20 years of experience, told the AmNews that the residential facilities her daughter stayed in were bastions of drug selling and drug abuse. According to her, people were even selling their AIDS medications.
Robert Smith is the superintendent of Mt. Hope Hotel, the residence where Lola was staying. He told the AmNews that Lola's death was not the building's fault. "We did give out fans to residents. Her death was not ...
