  • Jazz great and former Bergen County resident George Benson, who gave us an unforgettable "On Broadway" rendition, takes his "Guitar Man" tour way off-Broadway -- to two venues in North Jersey. TELL ME MORE: The 10-time Grammy winner, known as both a superb vocalist and jazz guitarist, is touring to support his new album, "Guitar Man," released earlier this month. The 12-song collection is an eclectic mix of jazz and pop standards, including "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "My Cherie Amour," the instrumental "Tequila," "Since I Fell for You" and "Danny Boy." In concert -- first at Englewood's bergenPAC, then at Morristown's Mayo Performing Arts Center -- he'll perform music from his new album, as well as the songs that have made him a hugely successful jazz-pop crossover artist.

WHAT ABOUT the Isley Brothers' "Shout," James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)," Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk," Prince's "When Doves Cry," Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove," Barbara Mason's "Yes I'm Ready" and Sister Sledge's "We Are Family"? Most of them are now standards, as are "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" (McFadden & Whitehead), "Me and Mrs. Jones" (Bill...

  • The CJO opened with a Motown medley that got the audience snapping its fingers to hits such as The Four Tops' "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and The Temptations' "My Guy." The opening set also included Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour," with a trumpet solo by CJO artistic director and bandleader Byron Stripling. [Jeanette Williams] came out to lend her powerhouse vocals to the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman," Mary Wells' "My Guy," and the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love." Williams really captured the retro sound of those '60s girl groups. After an intermission, [Kirk Whalum] joined the CJO for a jazzy, instrumental version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely." Whalum's saxophone playing goes very well with these R&B g...

  • Some critics have implied his creative powers also have receded since the 1970s, when he recorded four legendary albums - "Talking Book," "Innervisions," "Fulfillingness First Finale" and "Songs in the Key of Life," the last of which included his classic single "Loves in Need of Love Today. From his earliest days as a prodigy covering Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" through such songs of his own as "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," "My Cherie Amour" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours," his music has sought to uplift and inform as well as entertain. Oh man, he was up at 5 a.m. today!" the musician, who looks noticeably tired, says with an emphatic laugh. "I was like, 'I came home late last night and I want to chill.' But he was like, 'WOO! WOO! WOO!' And he wouldn't stop."

  • After Wonder and [Aisha Morris] sat side by side, wiping tears off their cheeks for a duet from his last album, 2005's A Time to Love, Wonder lightened up the mood by acting a fool during "If You Really Love Me," singing the lines over and over in different octaves and throwing in a belch for good measure. He plowed through more '70s stuff, then went way back in time, hitting the crowd with "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" (which goofily ended with him hamming it up again, singing it as a country song), "My Cherie Amour" ("This song's about a girl I tried to get with," he chuckled) and "For Once in My Life. It's much easier to check off the songs he didn't sing: "Pastime Paradise"-guess he didn't bring the cowbell; "Creepin'"-he couldn't possibly do a song Luther Vandross put his...

  • His first major hit was "Fingertips." That recording was followed "Uptight (Eveiything's All Right)" "For Once in My Life," "My Cherie Amour," "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours," and "If You Really Love Me," to name a few. He undertook the study of classical piano, and later, music theory, and beginning in 1967, he began writing more of his own material. He co-wrote the Smokey Robinson & the Miracle shit "The Tears of a Clown." In the early 1970s, [Stevie Wonder] toured with the Rolling Stones and had major hits with "Superstition" and "You are the Sunshine of My Life. In the mid-70s, his album "Songs in the Key of Life" topped the charts for 14 weeks. It was the biggest album of his career. It included the hits "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and "Pastime Paradise." By the time he was 1...

  • CONGRATULATIONS to Motown songwriter/producer Sylvia Moy on her recent induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Although the Detroiter has been involved in an array of projects, she is best known for the songs she co-wrote for [Stevie Wonder], including "I Was Made to Love Her," "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and "My Cherie Amour." However, there are also hits composed for other artists, such as Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston's "It Takes Two. MEMORIES: "This Must Be Heaven" (Brainstorm), "One in a Million You" (Larry Graham), "Can I?" (Eddie Kendricks), "You Need Love Like I Do (Don't You)" (Gladys Knight & the Pips), "Up for the Down Stroke" (Parliament), "Personality" (Lloyd Price), "I Can't Believe You Love Me" (Tammi Terrell), "Groovin"' (the Young Rascals), "Hollywood Swingi...

  • Among those who have dipped into the vast [Stevie Wonder] catalogue are Mary J. Blige ("Overjoyed"), Randy Crawford ("Joy Inside My Tears"), Barbra Streisand ("All in Love is Fair"), O'Bryan ("You and I"), Aretha Franklin ("Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do))," Ray Charles ("Living For the City"), and let's not forget Coolio transforming Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" into "Gangster's Paradise" (A somewhat dubious honor, perhaps). Stevie Wonder fully deserves his icon status. His songs rate among the all-time best - "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours," "I Just Called to Say I Love You," "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "My Cherie Amour," "I Was Made to Love Her," "Ribbon in the Sky," "Sir Duke," "Lately," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and...
