The figure of the blind musician - an artist whose lack of sight leads to a heightened ear and uncommon musical gifts - is at least as old as the Greek poet Homer. Closer to home, Raul Midn, the funky Latin-tinged singer/ songwriter/guitarist who makes his Memphis-area debut at the Bartlett Performing Arts & Conference Center Saturday, follows in a long line of distinguished sightless musicians - Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Jos Feliciano, Ronnie Milsap and a whole host of rather obviously named blues musicians, including Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell and Blind Boy Fuller. But despite the historical connection between the two, Midn says blindness and musical ability are not necessarily one and the same.
The audience members at the Oklahoma History Center were mesmerized as they sat under the Winnie Mae airplane listening to the magnificent musical tribute to Wiley Post, who flew that plane decades ago. The Oklahoma City University Symphony Orchestra was outstanding as it played a symphonic tone poem commissioned by Richard L. Sias. Led by conductor Benjamin Nilles, the Wiley Post: Tone Poem for Violin and Orchestra featured internationally recognized Oklahoma violinist Kyle Dillingham. His musical ability on the violin is unbelievable. The breathtaking and memorable music was composed by Callen Clarke, also a noted Oklahoma musician.
Cross country is a sport where the athlete's legs, lungs and mind are pushed to their limits to finish ahead of the pack. For Keystone Oaks senior Matt Drabick, his musical ability came into play in some meets.
The website Aviary.com has introduced a new utility that can help anybody old enough to use a mouse . And you don't need any musical ability. Aviary provides a slew of free, web-based tools -- an image editor like Photoshop, a screen capture tool, a vector editor and more. None are quite as powerful as the downloadable program versions, free or otherwise (like Gimp, which is a free Photoshop clone), but all are far easier to use and web-based, which adds some utility.
Brown's exceptional talents consisting of singing, his dynamic rhythm and poetry moved swiftly as lightening in several areas which projected him as a compelling playwright and producer that utilized him particularly as a civil rights activist. The amazing young theatrical genius remained in New York and established the H.I.P. It was in New York that he premiered "Kicks & Co." which Davy Garroway hosted on his "Today" show. Four decades - and little else - separate Larry Jon Wilson and Patrick Blanchard. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Blanchard, who will perform together Friday at the Augusta Museum of History's Blues and Bar-B-Que benefit, began their relationship with infrequent visits and the occasional telephone call. As a boy, Mr. Blanchard would hear the older musician's distinctive baritone over the phone every Christmas.
I play the piano. I have a classical background and studied musical composition for many years as part of my educational upbringing. That said, I recently witnessed a computer program that gives someone with literally no musical background the ability to create musical compositions that would make a professional jealous. At first, it made me wonder if I had wasted all those years of musical study. But I quickly discovered that while a novice can create great-sounding music with Apple Computer's GarageBand (www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/), in the hands of a musician, a product like this is one of the best tools of inspiration I have ever seen. Now there are a lot of music software products out there that let you generate just about any instrument sound you can imagine, and ev...

Most people who see the show come in thinking they're getting a concert of Cole's greatest hits, but this is really a first class musical that has as much going for it in terms of acting, singing, and musical ability as any Broadway play. Besides the music, you learn about the life of Nat King Cole," said [Kent], who performs the role as a tenor - Cole's register. "I can swing from one end to the other, although I don't get paid to sing base baritone even though that's where I live actually," added the New Jersey resident, who landed the role while starring in the London production of "Five Guys Named Moe," where he played Nomax, receiving stellar reviews from the British press.
