While the debate isn't necessarily settled on sampling, [McLeod], along with El-P and Mr. Len, participated in a question-and-answer session with the Paley authence and discussed several landmark lawsuits in music. One of those involved Gilbert O'SuIlivan's lawsuit against Biz Markie in 1991 over his parody of the singer's "Alone Again (Naturally)" track. The court ruled from that moment forward, all samples had to be cleared with the original artist before use. But there was one problem with the ruling. There are many artists that don't own their samples.
For decades, the artist was ignorant of what the value of their music was," said El-P, whose real name is Jamie Meline. "They would sign these contracts that didn't give them any rights at all." Many artists, including George Clinton...

A copyright system is designed to produce an ecology that nurtures the creation, dissemination, and enjoyment of works of authorship. When it works well, it encourages creators to generate new works, assists intermediaries in disseminating them widely, and supports readers, listeners, and viewers in enjoying them. If the system poses difficult entry barriers to creators, imposes demanding impediments on intermediaries, or inflicts burdensome conditions and hurdles on readers, then the system fails to achieve at least some of its purposes. The current U.S. copyright statute is flawed in all three respects. In this Article, I explore how the current copyright system is failing its intended beneficiaries. The foundation of copyright law’s legitimacy, I argue, is built on its evident ...

His first album "Four Star," was met with critical attention from Billboard magazine and "Mother, Fools are a Long Line Coming" was recorded by Fred Neil on his "Sessions" album, released by Capitol.
I liked documenting stuff, it's kind of like the writer part of me. I just like to write stories. People I meet, I turn some of them into songs," Metoyer said. "That's just my first love. When I first started playing guitar, folk music was the thing I was addicted to right from the beginning.
"Folk music was no longer popular. All of the protesting and stuff had pretty much settled down. The market for folk music just dropped," Metoyer said. "I was so embedded to it I'm not a gutbucket blues singer. Folk is about the only thing suitable for my voice."
After writing the song, it made sense...

More than his success as a recording artiste and star, Reshmonu has expanded into the recording industry with an insight into the growing ringtone market and music publishing.
NEWER technology and the changing face of music production have not just reinvented the recording industry but the way some local artistes themselves operate. Tech-savvy artistes like Reshmonu, who were part of the changing music production landscape, did not just sit around twirling their dreadlocks. After the initial success of his multi-award-winning album Monumental and follow-up albums such as Superfine and Harapan, Reshmonu, an urban English singing artiste with Malay hits, explored what possibilities the music business offered. It seemed only right that he might want to produce his albums and work closely w...

In this case, students examine financial and managerial accounting concepts in an identifiable setting, the pop music industry. As background to the accounting issues, students get an introduction to the pop music industry through a brief look at two years in the recording life of a sixteen-year old newcomer artist. The primary financial accounting issue is how recording studios account for production and promotion costs for albums of new and untested recording artists. The managerial accounting issues revolve around cost behavior patterns and break-even analysis. The issues of fixed, variable, mixed, and discretionary fixed costs are introduced. Using the industry's average break-even level of sales, students are asked to approximate the variable costs for CDs and project what happens ...
