Recently, I visited the home of a close relative and saw a mushroom growing in the crack of the hardwood floor outside the door that leads to a bathroom, and there appeared to be some water damage. The floor surrounding the mushroom was black (possible mold and mildew). Should this be cause for alarm? The mushroom is on the second floor. Any suggestions?

BALDWIN CITY -- Alan Terry hikes through the oak woods on his Oak Ridge Farm north of Baldwin City and stops in a grove of cedar trees. Underneath the cedars is what appears to be a graveyard for portions of oak logs.
But the opposite is true. The 18- to 20-inch oak logs are the incubators for Terry's crop of shiitake mushrooms.
